image distortion issues that come from this, and
think for a minute
about what others see when they look at our clothing.
I
think that's part of the reason why I write so often
about body image — half the time, I'm preaching to myself.
It was International Women's Day this week which was kind of fitting because I have
thought a lot lately
about what women endure with
body image.
I've also been
thinking about how developing a better
body image probably needs women and girls to consciously re-inhabit their
bodies... through dance or other physical movement and celebrating all the things the
body can do and the joy we can take in it.
I
think we need to talk to our daughters and sons
about the messages that the media is sending them
about women,
body image, and sex, much in the same way that we deconstruct the messages
about fast food and other issues.
Not that I am without self conscious or
body image issues but I rarely have a problem with
thinking negatively
about my
body when I am with my husband.
Every parent knows what sort of
body image messages are in popular media, so keep tabs on what your kids are watching, and talk to them
about what you
think is appropriate.
Think about your own
body image issues and biases: Do you talk
about needing to go on a diet or complain that you look terrible in those jeans?
Thinking back, I clearly had some version of an eating disorder that led me to be obsessive compulsive
about food and have a completely unhealthy
body image.
Thinking about my
body and external
image reminds me of the feeling of being stuck, being stuck in one's
body, a
body that the owner doesn't connect with, acknowledge, or maybe even want.
Messages
about beauty and
body image can have a dramatic impact on how we
think about ourselves.

I still struggle with disordered
thoughts about food and
body image but Matt Stone and other NON diet fans have been helping lately.

Before you joke around with your teen
about negative features on other people's
body,
think about how that may impact your teen's
body image moving forward.

bodies, the
images that go along with that and the
thoughts that we can obsess
about....
By initiating these topics you give your child a safe forum to share their
thoughts and feelings
about body image.
