In a sane world, the news that broke from Paris this week would have led front pages everywhere, as the major industrialized nations, responding to pressure from the poorest and most climate - threatened countries on Earth, voiced support for the goal of limiting warming to an improbable 1.5 degrees Celsius, rather than a disastrous two degrees.

Warming temperatures, rising seas, ocean acidification, changes to regional weather patterns — nearly every consequence of climate change threatens the world's 8.7 million species in some way.

Global warming is destroying species, raising sea levels and threatening millions of poor people, the United Nations» top scientific panel will say in a report today that U.N. officials hope will help mobilize the world to take tougher actions on climate change.
