One goal in neurobiology is to understand how the flow of electrical signals
through brain circuits gives rise to perception, action, thought, learning and memories.
Just as computers use programming languages such as Java, the brain seems to have its own operating languages — a bewildering set of codes hidden in the rates and timing with which neurons fire as well as the rhythmic electrical activities that oscillate
through brain circuits.
When we hold an item in working memory, these oscillations move
through brain circuits in waves that rise and fall scores of times.

Three times I have been felled by lightning pain as seizures short -
circuited my
brain; Three times, waking in hospitals at dawn all memory of my poetry was gone, and once I'd nearly bitten
through my tongue.
The change in what the volunteers saw was so fast, Dilks says, that it must be due to the
brain redirecting signals
through pre-existing
circuits rather than forging new connections.
Ultimately, these neurons form a
circuit between the
brain and the target tissue
through which chemical and electrical signals are relayed.
The researchers also investigated how pheromone signals are transmitted
through the olfactory
circuit in the
brain.
To map how the same sense can be perceived differently in the
brain, the NYU Langone team, led by postdoctoral fellow Kishore Kuchibhotla, PhD, monitored nerve
circuit activity in mice when the animals expected, and did not expect, to get a water reward
through a straw - like tube (that they see) after the ringing of a familiar musical note.
Rushworth is now mapping the
circuit using diffusion - weighted MRI, which tracks the movement of water
through the
brain, to find out which areas the DPFC is linked to.
«We show that an immune molecule directly controls
brain circuits through neurons,» Kipnis says.
«We are exploring this
through modelling information processing in parts of the insect
brain, and we find that often, exceedingly difficult tasks, for example in visual pattern recognition or floral scent learning, can be solved with extremely simple neural
circuits.
Similarly, using light to stimulate atrophied neurons that may be associated with schizophrenia could someday allow clinicians to repair cognitive function, Boyden said, and enhance the flow of information
through disordered
brain circuits that otherwise may be giving rise to delusions and paranoia.
New research presented by Dr. Jonathan Britt, from McGill University, helps to better understand how reward signals, such as those produced by addictive drugs, travel
through the
brain and modify
brain circuits.
Prior research showed that the mPOA is important for social and reproductive behavior in all vertebrate species studied from fish to human, but it has been unclear whether this area drives social motivation
through circuit connections with reward systems in the
brain.
Understanding the dynamic mechanisms that lead to the emergence of
brain functions
through the development and continuous remodelling of neural
circuits, and the constraints that disease and aging impose to this multi-modal plasticity has important implications that go beyond fundamental neuroscience, from education policies to
brain repair.
Through the activation of
brain circuits with light, female voles were tricked into selecting specific partners
The information gathered by your senses is transmitted by nerve cells, or neurons, to specific
brain regions where the signal is routed
through circuits and sent downstream to areas that essentially translate the information into behavior and get you back on track.
At Weizmann, Dr. Spiegel will be establishing his own independent research group which will attempt to identify the molecular and cellular mechanisms
through which experience alters the structure and function of neural
circuits in the
brain in behaviorally relevant ways and to understand how these processes, when they go awry, might give rise to psychiatric disorders.
Over hundreds of years, scientists have learned much about the
brain, including the countless methods
through which information is transferred from neuron to neuron at a junction called a synapse, and how hundreds — even thousands — of neurons can function together to form a larger
circuit responsible for any given activity.
We know a great deal about the genomic mechanisms
through which androgens and estrogens influence behavior; by turning genes on and off and thus affecting levels of proteins in cells, they slowly sculpt the
brain circuits and peripheral structures required to produce social output.
DAVIDSON: We know from research that engaging in acts of generosity activates
circuits in the
brain that we know to be involved in positive emotion, and one of the most powerful ways of activating that circuitry is
through prosocial, generous behavior.

Thus, early adversity and later developmental health are linked
through the structural and functional development of specific
brain and nervous system
circuits, from executive function to responses to stress.
