This crossover is quite simply very good at carrying momentum
through corners, using intentional weight transfer to speed up turn - in, and building up ground - effect fourth and
fifth -
gear road holding that doesn't wane after five or six laps.
The long, lazy
gearing that allowed you to grunt
through city streets in fourth and
fifth gears is gone.
The answer is invariably yes, so pretty quickly you're snapping
through the
gears, the engine screaming towards the limiter and you find yourself attacking
fifth -
gear turns with all of your bravery.
On each of these rural roads, whether straight and flat or winding and hilly, I'm running the engine up and down
through third, fourth, and
fifth gear, and looking far
through corners so I can trace a smooth line to the next bend.
During climbs, the transmission would drop down to fourth or
fifth gear, but as soon as the grade was conquered it would cycle
through the successive
gears and settle back to a comfortable cruise in eighth.
The C5 - R handles very well and our advantage on a track like this will be in corners like Turn 7, where the level of grip allows me to come
through there in

through third and the engine isn't very loud: more decibels means more thrills.

To test for
fifth gear wear, wind up all the windows, put the transfer case into neutral, start the engine and shift
through the box.
But for the first turn, it's not how deep you brake but whether you need to lift to make it
through in
fifth or sixth
gear.

through four and optimize fuel economy in its overdrive
fifth gear.
