The Foundation's pro bono program develops pro bono partnerships with bar associations, law firms, courts, law schools and
legal aid organizations to: increase and maintain the number of lawyers who take pro bono cases; increase the number of individuals, both low - income and special populations, that receive free
legal assistance; and assist pro bono providers to be more effective and efficient
through innovation and technology.
Collectively, lawyers are encouraged to enhance the profession
through activities such as: (a) sharing knowledge and experience with colleagues and students informally in day - to - day practice as well as
through contribution to professional journals and publications, support of law school projects and participation in panel discussions,
legal education seminars, bar admission courses and university lectures; (b) participating in
legal aid and community
legal services programs or providing
legal services on a pro bono basis; (c) filling elected and volunteer positions with the Society; (d) acting as directors, officers and members of local, provincial, national and international bar associations and their various committees and sections; and (e) acting as directors, officers and members of non-profit or charitable
organizations.
In fact, as part of my job with Pro Bono Net, a nonprofit that works with
legal aid organizations, pro bono programs, and courts to improve access to justice
through increasing volunteerism, collaboration, and effective use of technology, I've had the opportunity to work with Pro Bono Law Ontario and seen how adding technology to their service delivery (both as support for their programs and as information for the general public) has allowed them to be more effective and efficient in their work.

Last fall, the LFW Board of Trustees asked the Supreme Court to enact a rule change that would increase the portion of future class action residuals earmarked for distribution to
legal aid organizations through LFW from 25 to 50 percent.
And so, it took a concerted effort of different
legal aid organizations in Tanzania to come together - one, and start the conversation and then after that, within a larger
legal sector, reform programs, start having these conversations with government as well -
through the Ministry of Justice and other justice sector ministries - for us to have a proper conversation around: how do we increase justice?
