program include the ability to count redemption nights toward elite status qualification and new welcome gifts (points or food and beverage items) at most
hotels in the U.S. for top
tier members.
To give the most trivial example of point density, here's the amount of money that has to be spent with each
hotel loyalty for a non-elite member using a third - party credit card to earn an award night at a top -
tier property in that
program, notwithstanding any promotions:

hotels, and almost comical service gaffes on stays at some of their top
tier hotels left me feeling that they wouldn't need such a generous loyalty
program if they just ran a better operation.

Before March 28, to earn a free night at a top
tier hotel, a general member of Hilton's
program would have to spend only $ 5,000 at Hilton properties, compared to the $ 17,500 a general member of Starwood Preferred Guest would have to spend for a top -
tier redemption with Starwood.
At the lower
tier hotels, the difference between the loyalty
programs remains smaller: a Starwood elite with the co-branded credit card would need to spend $ 2000 to earn a free night at a Category 4 Starwood property, while a Hilton Gold elite with the free American Express card would need to spend $ 1622 in order to earn enough points for a free Category 4 Hilton night.
Although none of these are top -
tier statuses, the added perks of Gold status with these 3
programs can certainly make your
hotel stays (and therefore your overall travel experience) much more pleasant.

programs (also known as

programs) where guests gain elite status by reaching specific
tiers.
InterContinental
Hotels Group announced the launch Spire Elite, the new top - level
tier for its IHG Rewards Club loyalty
program.
In this
tiered program, agents can receive perks based on their level of sales with The Mark Travel Corporation and its brands, such as
hotel stays, flights, air credits, and discounts on TMTC fam trips and events.
Most
hotel loyalty
programs use a progressive
tier system.
At a valuation of.4 cents per point, this amounts to an 8 % return which isn't very compelling for a top -
tier status compared with other
hotel loyalty
programs.

I explained a week ago how I nearly stumbled into a situation where I have a good chance of obtaining top -
tier status in a
hotel program for the first time.
In March 2014 Club Carlson introduced a new top -
tier in its
program which immediately raised the cost of an award night (at one of the better
hotels) from 50,000 to 70,000 points per night — a staggering 40 % price increase!
A further consideration that narrowed down the choice of
hotel brands was that I wanted to give us the best chance of getting a good room upgrade — that would almost certainly mean using either Marriott or Starwood properties as I have top -
tier status in both of their loyalty
programs.
A Hyatt Credit Cardmember may earn Explorist or Globalist status in the World of Hyatt
program through February 2019 by completing a specified number of
Tier - Qualifying Nights (as defined in the World of Hyatt
program terms, available at worldofhyatt.com/terms) at any participating Hyatt
hotel or resort worldwide.

Hyatt's loyalty
program was once considered one of the better
hotel programs around with top -
tier elites treated especially well (I loved Hyatt Diamond status for the year that I had it).
It turned out that, not only was Hyatt happy to match status from another
hotel group, but they were matching to their top -
tier Diamond status — and you didn't even need to have top -
tier status with another loyalty
program to get Hyatt Diamond Status.
And similar to the Ambassador
program, Kimpton's top -
tier «Inner Circle» members will continue to receive additional perks at Kimpton
hotels, above IHG's top -
tier Spire members, for example an Inner Circle Amenity or a complimentary night at new
hotels.
So for a bottom
tier status, Discoverist gives you a very decent return on spending when compared to other major
hotel programs.
Here's an overview of the different
tiers offered by five of the major
hotel programs and a look at how you could earn status with these
hotels.
Presently, the $ 69 annual fee version of the card offers a sign - up bonus of 30,000 points with first purchase, and earns you 5x per $ 1 on
hotel stays and 2x per $ 1 on everything else, and offers a cardmember anniversary bonus of 5,500 points, the old
program's redemption rate for one night at a Wyndham
Tier 1
hotel.
Most

Noted
program drawbacks included the fact that points expire after two years without activity, rooms at higher -
tier hotels cost a lot of points and that the elite membership levels are more difficult to reach than with Starwood Preferred Guest or Hilton HHonors.
The most significant change was that they did away with standard redemption
tiers / categories that most other
hotel programs use (category 3, 4, 5, etc.) and they put in a new redemption scheme where properties can be redeemed for 15,000 points per night (that means you can get 3 free nights with this card).
Since I touched on elite status, it's worth noting the window for accumulating
tier points and benefitting from elite status is different with M life than with many traditional
hotel programs.
Most
hotel programs operate a «
tier system,» where
hotels cost the amount of points associated with the
tier or category in which they are placed.
But Starwood Preferred Guest has a few benefits that set it apart and make it my favorite
program for top -
tier hotel elite status, including a few that were introduced last year when SPG updated its elite benefits — and the fact that there are over 1,000 properties (with more coming online every month) in brands I enjoy like St. Regis, Westin, the W and Sheraton where I can enjoy those benefits puts Starwood Preferred Guest firmly in first place in my
hotel elite status quest.
Hyatt is excited about the changes to the
program, so on March 1, 2017, they'll be giving all of their top
tier Globalist members a free night valid at any Category 1 - 7
hotel.
Keep in mind: Booking
hotels with sites like these won't earn you
hotel points or count towards the number of nights needed for an elite
tier of a loyalty
program.
I call Club Carlson one of the best
hotel rewards
programs for earning free nights because as a base member, it takes just $ 3,500 worth of paid stays to earn a free night at a top -
tier hotel.

Drew recently wrote an article for Frugal Travel Guy suggesting the different ways to get top
tier status with the various
hotel programs, since RA status is invite - only and therefore... not a «strategy» we can recommend per say.
