I «painted» the inside of the firebox black (heat resistant paint) and suggested she use some kind of gray
tile (which would speak to the gray veining in the marble) on the

I wanted to try something simple on the sides of the fireplace, so I used the same MDF that I used for the
hearth and cut pieces to build up each side even with the
tile.
While our
tile and
hearth will be different, the area above the fireplace will be something along the lines of what you see in the picture.
While they were not going to be installed next to any other flooring (except the lower level
tile in the hall and on the
hearth), it was still helpful to think about how these floors would fit into the overall design of our home.
After that, we'll move on to covering the existing floor
tile in front of the fireplace with a product called Skimstone, which will create the look of a smooth, polished concrete
