Ecobee, which sells a thermostat that enables users to change the temperature via a mobile app and uses machine learning to adjust to changes in price in real
time, is using Amazon's Alexa voice assistant to innovate.
For some
time, the company's thermostats have been controllable via the Alexa voice assistant, thanks to an
Ecobee skill.
If you're going on vacation soon, and don't want to be bothered changing the thermostat as you're trying to wrangle the family, the
Ecobee actually allows you to schedule the thermostat to go into an away mode ahead of
time.
Otherwise, you're all set and your
Ecobee thermostat will automatically be put into Vacation Mode at the
time and date you specified.
If you know you'll be going on vacation in a few days, you can have your
Ecobee prepare in advance by scheduling a vacation mode so that you won't have to worry about it when the
time comes.
If you're going the HomeKit route, you'll need to turn instead to
Ecobee, a brand that's been making smart thermostats for several years now (and since before the
time of Nest).
Unfortunately, you can only set this up from the thermostat itself and not from the
Ecobee app on your phone (like the Nest allows you to do), but it's easy to do and doesn't take a lot of
time at all.
