I wonder what would be revealed if scientists would be permitted to
study the remains in the tomb at Machpelah... after all, like all things
Biblical, we only have one reference, and we ONLY have Abraham's word that he saw the face of God (contrary to John 1:18: No man hath seen God at any
time, AND John 6:46: Not that any man hath seen the Father)... Bet you those bones aren't from a 175 year old man and 127 year old woman...
Almost certainly they give more
time to
Biblical study and prayer than most others.
Others have thought theologically from a perspective shaped by
study of the Near Eastern religions of
Biblical times.

time when agricultural - village life was breaking down and urban - cosmopolitan patterns were not yet fully formed.
The alternative method, often used by scholars, considers one epoch of
Biblical religion at a
time, presenting the entire complex of ideas which characterized that era, and then moves on to
study the next succeeding epoch as a whole.
Since I do not have
time to take a semester of
biblical study and get back to, I will have to assume some of these catholic sites know what they're talking about, and you do not.
Having
studied biblical theology in graduate school (part of the
time under a conservative Rabbi) and currently
studying theology at the Pontificia Universita Gregorian in Rome as a seminarian, I regard Meir Soloveichik's
biblical theology as unrepresentative of what the Hebrew Scriptures teach.
One fundamentalist pastor I interviewed some
time ago said he was much in favor of the
study of
biblical theology, but opposed the
study of systematic theology because the latter presupposed too much about human wisdom.
The fact that
biblical scholars, many of whom have made it their full -
time job to

studied to discover their origins, how and why they changed through
time, what their influences have been, etc..

studied the lives and
times of the
biblical authors to help me know what they were saying in their day so I could better apply it to my own.
Kelly's summary of the trends in the curriculum of Oberlin Seminary applies to many others as well: «The program of
study was changing from the dogmatic to the practical, from the ecclesiocentric to the socio - centric... «34 More recent examinations show the continuation of these emphases in our
time though they also show a revival of interest in systematic and exegetical theology and in the
Biblical languages.
In fact, when I've actually taken the
time to
study the issues that trigger my doubts — issues like religious pluralism, the Problem of Evil,
biblical interpretation, evolution, predestination and free will — I come out with a stronger, more resilient faith.
If you have been caught in error in the past, or if you are afraid of being caught in error in the future, you can mature and protect yourself from false teachers by taking
time and making effort to
study good
biblical teaching and listen to good
biblical teachers.
This perspective had been sharpened by a year's
study at Berlin, but it is striking that his interests at that
time were such that he did not attend any lectures in theology, even those of Harnack.5 Although he developed great appreciation for Harnack in later years, he worked out his own approach to
Biblical scholarship by applying to the scriptures methods developed with other subject matters in view.
Popularizations often have this effect, but Bloom is a major figure and a serious literary critic (jacket - cover blurbs rightly identify him as «America's pre-eminent literary critic» and «the critic of our
time»), so in trying to comprehend the level of the argument I found myself opting at
times for disingenuousness, bombast or simple ignorance of the field of
biblical studies.
Similarly, there have always been scholars within the Church, of the highest quality and integrity, who have used the critical tools available to them at the
time in their
biblical studies.
Like many other old liberal Protestant ideas, Dibelius's view passed into wide circulation in the Catholic world when
biblical studies engaged with modern historical criticism at the
time of the Second Vatican Council.
