Now it's
time for game devs to do the same!

Obviously people are buying the Wii U why else would we get the best Lego
Game to date and we are getting splinter cell the Wii U can't get any of the «next gen
games» because the
devs won't want to make them
for the Wii U and not
for the xbox and the PS4 later they want to wait and do it all at the same
time that is the only problem that the Wii U has right now
I have one and only one concern
for these Sonic projects (which both seem like turns toward the right direction imo) and that is Sega's notorious short
dev times for Sonic
games.
After all, the extra
dev time is used to further polish the
game, which is only good
for us.
RPGs are the most
time - taking
games for development, and developers are just starting to understand Wii U's
dev kits, start begging
for an RPG (or even a JRPG) is too early, IMO.
I know man, its ridiculous
for people to think that the entire rockstar team is working on this, they have differnt
dev teams working on different
games, just like insomiac, i'm a huge zombie addict and i'm really excited bout this, i'm expecting this to be pretty fun, and just in
time for halloween.
The technology will makes it much easier to set the foundation
for a new
game so
devs can spend more
time working creatively to make an original
game and less
time on the basics.
but as long as people jump on some broken
games day one, the
devs will not feel pressure to solve the disaster
for next
time.
Maybe a hybrid system where you can try a
game for 30 minutes
for free to see if there are major ergonomy issues in the feel of the
game that make it absolutely worthless to you, and then a 3 dollars extended tryout
for 150 minutes, so that at least the
devs gets something
for that
time you spent on their
game (after all you still spent a couple hours on it), while the player does not have to commit the full $ 50.
That's what I like about
games that have a currency you purchase
for cash which most publishers and
devs are completely oblivious or too greedy to do, which is to allow
gamers to also earn that currency just by putting
time into the
game.
All these stories floating around N4G, Microsoft has unaccounted dgpu in the Xbox 1, Microsoft has 15 co processors unaccounted
for, Microsoft
games are doing what the competitors can't, Every Xbox 1 is a
dev kit, The Xbox 1 is capable of 204 TF, The power of the cloud, can make the Xbox 1 three
times more powerful, and many other things, but they all have 1 thing in common!
- despite the new business partnership with Cygames, Nintendo is very satisfied with its mobile business - they are also happy with the various projects created in partnership with DeNA, and their relationship will continue - Nintendo is trying to expand its lineup of mobile
games - Cygames had a plan
for a title that was very deep and Nintendo thought it was important to develop and operate it jointly - DeNA doesn't just support Nintendo's mobile applications, but also its Nintendo Account system with tech and
dev support - those areas of Nintendo's partnership will also continue - Nintendo is open to partner with other companies as well in the future - by using Nintendo IP in mobile apps, the company wants to spread awareness about Nintendo's characters - ultimately they'd like it to become synergistic with the console business - Nintendo wants to make mobile
games one of the pillars of revenue - it's not enough to just expand dedicated internal development resources
for this goal - this is why Nintendo is looking
for possibilities to do it externally as well - Nintendo thought that Cygames» plan with Dragalia Lost was common ground
for the companies, so they decided to partner - one important factor to think about when managing a company like Nintendo is that its products aren't daily necessities - Nintendo creates entertainment and fun, and the essence of its business will remain unchanged - Nintendo says it's a high - risk business, and there are
times in which performance could be good or bad - Nintendo will continue to create specialized gaming hardware and software
for the world - the aim is to be successful every
time, but sometimes it will work out, and sometimes it won't - instead of thinking «I can't do this» they'd rather think «what can we do to continuously tighten our relationship with the customers?»
I disagree, I still think turn based RPG's are pretty niche, Persona has been around
for decades and is STILL considered niche, simply because unlike Final Fantasy it isn't mainstream, i'm hoping that in
time JRPG
devs or
devs in general would look towards
games like Persona 5 as their influences vs
games like Final Fantasy 15, which while good in it's own right had a lot of issues and seemed to be rushed to the point where an entire story chapter had to be added, and new features are still being added to make the
game better.
The idea was to get 3rd party
devs to make
games for the PS3 and not have enough
time or want to spend the effort to make
games for the 360.

for Sonic's 25th anniversary last year, Iizuka received a task to deliver some sort of product - the target was «dormant fans» who used to play the SEGA Genesis, but haven't really played any
games since - Iizuka met Christian Whitehead, which lead to the creation of Sonic Mania - there was talk of another port, but Iizuka thought fans would desire something new from the old
games - this is the first
time Iizuka partnered with a team of
devs spread across various countries - Iizuka said this team had a greater passion to create - this was in comparison to companies that set decisions on a pre-determined schedule (in meetings, etc)- the team had so many features they still wanted to add after the beta version was complete - since there were only a few spots with text that needed to be localized, they could bring the
game to more places quicker - the
game has Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish support - the Studiopolis stage is included due to receiving the most requests from the Sonic Mania development team - Iizuka actually considered reducing the amount of stages at one point in order to meet the development schedule - Sonic Mania doesn't really have much in the way of cut content like scrapped stages - since Sonic Mania was only distributed digitally, the team was able to continue working very close leading up to launch - this let them put in practically all ideas, and there are currently no plans
for DLC - Iizuka recommended Flying Battery Zone
for inclusion becaues he likes the music - he also likes when the player goes inside and outside the ship - Iizuka likes Mirage Saloon because the stage structure will be different depending on the player character chosen - Puyo Puyo gameplay was added because there was a Puyo Puyo
game released in the west
for the SEGA Genesis - this
game was originally called «Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine», and the team thought it would make a fun boss battle - Iizuka didn't have plans to feature Blue Sphere in the special stages - the Blue Sphere special stages were brought over to Mania as a test, but ended up staying
for the final
game - the team felt the need to continuously connect stages from various eras, which is doe with the Phantom Ruby story -
for Sonic Mania, it was decided that the technological limit would be set at SEGA CD, - this is higher than the Genesis but lower than Saturn - in creating a SEGA CD - grade special stage, they would intentionally make SEGA CD - grade polygons
- Iizuka has received a ton of requests from fans to have their own original characters appear in Sonic
games - while that couldn't happen, Sonic Forces» custom character recognizes that fan desire - the avatar was created with the idea of «making straight high - speed action» - this
time the concept is that all three styles (Modern, Classic, Avatar) would be high - speed based - make selections
for the face, mouth, body color, and gender of custom characters - each species will also have their own unique skills, such as wolves being able to pull nearby rings - you can't change custom characters in the middle of the

I also feel like Quantum Break will either need to be delayed
for quite awhile (Remedy's track record of a slower
dev time coupled w / the
time mechanics & live tv segments seem to point to this
game not releasing this year), or Microsoft might push them to rush the
game out in order to have a compelling exclusive in

The reason behind the cancellation of the console demos were so the
devs could have «the
time and resources to make the retail version of the
game a polished experience,» which at the moment has been submitted
for review with both Microsoft and Sony.
- the
game's shading mechanism has changed, which allows
for increased gear texture quality - all graphical aspects and programming mechanisms have been built up from scratch
for this sequel - maximum resolution is 1080p in TV mode - a bigger focus
for Nintendo was the 60 frames per second - occasionally the resolution will be scaled down when there is too much ink displaying on the screen - Nintendo reduced the CPU load and refined the way to use CPU power effectively to maintain 60 fps in all matches - weapons were tweaked to let players be more creative by thinking about unique weapon characteristics and their best uses - weapons are designed to be effective when they are used during the right occasion - Special weapons are stronger than the original ones when used in the right situation, but weaker otherwise - the damage and effect of slowing down your movement when you step in the opponent's ink are reduced from original - you can jump up in rank if you're good enough, but only up until S - you can't jump up from C, B or A to S + - when you win battles in Ranked mode, the Ranked meter fills and your rank goes up when its fully filled - when you lose a battle, the gauge does not decrease, but the meter starts to crack - once the meter reaches its limit, it breaks - when the meter breaks, you have to start over again from the beginning or from a lower rank - highest rank is still S +, but if you fill up the Ranked meter, you get numbers after the alphabet such as «S +1», «S +2» and so on - maximum number is «S +50», but this number will not be displayed to your opponent - you are the only one to see it, and you can check it on your own status screen - Ranked Power is calculated by an algorithm to measure how strong each player is with minuteness - this will determine if a player's rank is worthy of receiving a big jump (like from «C» to «A»)- Ranked Power has no relation to your splat rate, and is more tied into to how well you lead your team to victory - you won't drop off more than one rank even if you play poorly - stage rotation
time was changed to two hours - this was done because the
devs expected people to play
for an hour or so, but they found people play much longer - with Salmon Run, Nintendo considered how to implement a co-op oriented mode in a player - versus - player type of
game - the
devs will monitor how users are playing this mode to see if there's some tweaks they can throw in - more Salmon Run maps will be added in the future, but Nintendo wouldn't comment on adding more enemy types to the mode - rewards are changed each
time Salmon Run is played - you can obtain rewards when playing locally, but not gear - originally Nintendo had an idea
for this mode, but had no background setting, enemy designs, etc. - Inoue suggested that it should be salmon - themed - when Nintendo hosted the Splatfest that pit Callie against Marie, the development of Splatoon 2 had started - the
devs had already decided to have the result reflected in the sequel - they even had an idea to announce the Splatfest with a phrase «Your choice will change the next Splatoon» - the
timing to announce a sequel wasn't right, so they decided against this - they eventually released a series of short stories about the Squid Sisters to show how the Splatfest affected the sequel's story - Nintendo wouldn't say if Marina is an Octoling, and noted that Inklings are not paying attention to this too much - Inklings don't care about appearances, as long as everyone is doing something fresh - the Squid Sisters had composers who produced their songs, but Off the Hook are composing their music by themselves - Pearl is genius artist, but she couldn't find a right partner because she's a bit too edgy - she eventually found Marina as a partner though, and their chemistry is sparkling right now - Nintendo is planning a year of content updates
for Splatoon 2 - when finished, the quantity of stages will be more than the original - some of the additional stages are totally new and some will be arranged stages from the first
game - not all original stages will return and they are choosing stages based on the potential
for them to be improved - Brella is shotgun-esque weapon, so the ink hits your opponent more if you are closer - it can shield damage when you open it, but the amount of damage has a limit and once it reaches it, it breaks - you can shoot ink, but you can't use the shield feature when it breaks - the shield won't prevent your allies ink - there are more new weapon categories which haven't been revealed yet - there are no other ranked modes outside of the three current options - the future holds any sort of possibility, but the
devs didn't get specific about adding more content like that -
for the modes, they adjusted the rule designs so that players will experience the more interesting aspects

- Aonuma and Miyamoto have played through BotW start to finish - the strangest thing Link can eat is «dubious food» which happens when you mess up cooking - «it's a secret» as to whether the Master Sword can break - Switch TV mode will have better resolution / sound than Wii U - Link can wear green, but it wasn't specified if this was his iconic green tunic - Link does no speak a full sentence - Link does not have a family - Breath of the Wild was the toughest Zelda
game to create - companions outside of your horse include a wolf, but this was most likely referencing the wolf Link amiibo - the stamina meter can be upgraded - Link's last name is the same as Mario's according to Miyamoto, meaning it's Link Link - Link is not human - Breath of the Wild takes place after Ocarina of
Time - Aonuma / Miyamoto are unsure what NX stood
for, but they say it was probably
for Nintendo X - you can eventually get a snowboard
for a shield (this may be a joke)- you can not eat horses - the
game does have big surprises - Miyamoto thinks that Pauline lives in New Donk City - Aonuma / Miyamoto say that Tingle is always happy and the
devs love him - While there are multiple Links in
games, it's always the same Mario in his adventures - the idea of Paper Zelda is discussed, and while the convo does seem playful, Aonuma says they're working on it.
- Link doesn't have much of a character in this
game - they wanted players to relate to Link and play as themselves - Link's face doesn't have much expression in this
game, and that was done on purpose -
for Zelda
games, the
devs always try to make the player feel like Link - that was pushed even moreso
for this entry - everytime a Zelda releases, Aonuma watches fan feedback and considers that
for the future - the items Link uses to solve are always going to be important - regardless of the tech that Nintendo provides, exploration in the series is important - Link's growth through who he meets is also an important element of the franchise - Aonuma thought about Zelda freedom when considering Breath of the Wild, and was brought back to the days of the original Zelda - this was a big point of inspiration
for Breath of the Wild - with Ocarina of
Time 3D, Nintendo wanted to really utilize the 3D and had a desire to let players enjoy Ocarina of
Time outside - the goal with A Link to the Past was creating more depth - Aonuma used to think that getting lost in a 3D world wasn't okay - this lead Aonuma to putting in tons of hints and guiding players - he has since changed that idea and convinced himself that it's okay to get lost - the first two years of development the
devs created a
game where just running around was fun - climbing is very important, because players can climb high and see destinations they want to visit - you can place your own markers to decide where you want to go - when the
devs create a Zelda title, they consider not using the name Link - since they don't have anything else to go with, they choose Link - the name Link doesn't hold much value, since the player is the one creating the journey - when Nintendo first created Link, they wanted a character that is literally the link between people - that is why his name is Link - to think that the Zelda series has been around so long that there are all sorts of urban legends and myths makes Miyamoto really happy
Before Alfa and Appodeal, Pavel had been in the
games industry
for several years, starting out «a long
time ago, when Perl was still popular,» the
dev and entrepreneur says.
I was optimistic that
Time Carnage would be a pinnacle in the genre as the
devs put a lot of content in here from multiple
game types to make
for a somewhat whacky shooter.
And the worst part, is indie
devs are expected to bow their heads at this and thank the youtuber
for taking their
time to make a video about our
game.
Mirza's story is perhaps emblematic of what the Hero's Journey should be
for game devs in these trying
times: specialize, consolidate, then make
games an order of magnitude better than what came before.
Devs are getting 16
times as much memory to work with so 60 fps and 1080p should be standard
for all
games on these consoles otherwise what's the improvement over the last generation?
PlayStation wants these third party
devs and pubs to take advantage of PS4's unique features
for their
games, such as additional features
for the PS4 version,
timed exclusives, or using SharePlay.
This is the kind of feeling that I have not felt
for a long
time and the level and character designs are so well realised that I did at
times question the sanity of the
game devs when coming across the more grotesque enemies in the
game.
I've already declared a dozen
times how much I love indie
games, be it
for their creativity, their courage of many small
devs who leave their jobs to follow their dreams, or
for the many possibilities big developers don't explore but they do.
This
time we're down in hometown Toronto
for a weekend of fun
times with comic pals and fellow
game devs at Comics X Games during the Toronto Comics Arts Festival.
Regarding the Persona franchise, the
Dev Team at Atlus (a subsidiary of SEGA that is also known
for creating franchises such as Etrian Odyssey and Trauma Center) claimed to want their
games to be relevant to the
time during which they were produced.
The Collective is currently home to six full -
time games developers, but is now offering the co-working space
for up to ten fellow
devs.
The
dev time for this one has also been extremely long, but I've learned that waiting
for Kickstarted
games is not something to hold your breath over.
The
game also features some sort of «possessing» mechanic that both Inside and Oddworld (easily those
games» main source of inspiration) also have, but this
time around, you get it pretty early in the
game, allowing
for the
devs to throw more elaborate puzzles at you after not even an hour of gameplay.
This
time, The Gamesmen talk about the Square Enix Marvel partnership, HD Rumble
for Breath Of The Wild, a
devs thoughts on the PS4 Pro, the death of Xbox One's snap mode, the Nintendo Switch
game boxes, and Windows 10's
game mode.
Also I'd be surprised if a
game is going to be featured in a bundle that it's
devs wouldn't know ahead of
time, so they could ask
for extra keys if need be.
This has happened multiple
times before over the years — most recently, the shift away from PC
games to console
games in the last decade meant that the PC space was left wide open
for indies, and many indie
devs had massive success on PC.
In fact, Mania is a result of the hard work put in by long -
time classic Sonic fan /
game dev, Christian Whitehead (a.k.a Taxman), whose work on ports of classic 2D Sonic
games to mobile devices and modern gaming consoles, made in conjunction with Headcannon, served as the pitch
for the entire project.
It's
time for Jack and Andy to review Little Nightmares, a charming horror
game from the
devs of LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway, but can this companies cutesy background really translate into a truly memorable spooky
game?
The indie
devs survive because they sacrifice their
time for the love of the
game, but at the end of the day, love doesn't pay the bills, and video
games are a hugely saturated market.
Nowadays when a
game releases on
time - especially an indie
game - I will experience a sinking feeling, because I will know that the only way this could have happened is through blood sacrifices and unacceptable artistic compromises, and I know that we wont get the
game we were hoping
for, nor the
game the
devs wanted to make.
Now that we got that out of the way, it's
time to move on to the burning question you're probably asking yourself if you're a PC
gamer, the question that probably compelled you to click on this article in the first place (unless, of course, it was the gameplay video or
dev diary that did it
for you).
The
dev kit part could be accurate, suggesting we're getting good lead
time on
game development which in turn could mean some seriously high quality, well - developed
games due
for release when the PS5 does arrive.
High Moon have done good work with the Transformers licence, delivering a promising (if flawed)
game in War
For Cybertron, with Dark of the Moon suffering mostly from a lack of
dev time.
