of a 2003 IEEE paper debunking the iris effect, and... how in the world can
so many scientists, many
of them frequent collaborators, screw up something this fundamental over such a long period
of time and have most
of it get through peer review in the same prestigious
publication?
But their PNAS
publication also referred to natural climate cycles, superimposed on the trend line, like ENSO and solar variability, both
of which have been net contributors to global cooling over 1998 - 2008 [
so climate skeptics can not — as they still do — point to either the Sun or El Niño to explain the world's temperature graph over that period
of time].
Just a couple quick examples: the boreholes were an early dissenter and entered the scene around the same
time as MBH; Wally Broecker published a letter in Science criticizing the MBH curve very shortly after it's
publication; divergence and curve standardization issues associated with the tree rings were widely being discussed by the late 90's and Esper et al. (2002) was an important later contribution in that regard, the prospect
of a localized or global LIA and MWP was (and is) a hot topic before MBH, and
so on.
The main example was
Time magazine, but it made me think
of another
publication that has more subtly switched gears over the past 40 years or
so to maintain the sense
of impending climate doom.
I see problems with: * you have to be an active promoter
of yourself to get articles read * the review process (mainly there is no ability to assess why rejected articles are rejected and the
time wasting because
of pedantic comments) * project - based funding and treating research like consulting (if I can tell you how much a project will cost, then by definition it is not research) * since academia seems to be drifting towards consulting, researchers start to become underpaid compared to peers in consulting * the focus on the number
of publications weighted by the rank
of the journal * status is based on if you publish in a high - rank journal, «selected» to be a lead author, and
so on, and not whether you do good and creative research, good collaborator, good colleague to peers, etc..
Well, at the
time I, like most folks didn't have ready access to «scientific sources»,
so I read the cries
of alarm in places like major newspapers, Scientific American, Science Digest, Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, and other such
publications, which in turn provided extensive quotes from authoritative «scientific sources».
I think that an author should have archived data or data citations and methods at the
time of publication, as in econometrics, and if he failed to do
so (as climate science has poor practices) then he has an obligation to take the
time to provide the requested information (and should perhaps think about making a proper archive.)
Here's another recent example — Pielke and his fellow conservative contrarian colleague Dan Sarewitz had an article in the Financial
Times recently («Climate policy robs the world's poor
of their hopes») that I think misses the mark
so badly, in a let's - be-provocative-and-act-like-we're - the - real - progressives way, that it would be tempting to ignore it, except that it's in a high - profile
publication and feeds misleading talking points to a right - wing corporate political and economic culture.
So following Gavin's proposal, I conclude that the problem we addressed and our «obvious» results were not «well known ahead
of time» before our
publication.
