Yesterday's announcement in the New York
Times that David Zwirner would be moving to a new $ 50m gallery in Chelsea only served to underscore the trend that ranges from developers
buying large - scale
art works to anchor complexes to real estate agents staging homes with borrowed
art works and, as Architectural Digest recently pointed out, developers taking booths at
art fairs to pitch their projects.
New auction houses, private museums and commercial
art fairs are launching all the
time, enhancing the opportunity to sell — and
buy.
Bought for the nation by the Chantrey Bequest in 1930, and in the possession of Tate Britain, where it was on display in February this year for the first
time in 30 years, but for only about a week, prior to its going to Manchester
Art Gallery, where it is currently on show as part of a major retrospective exhibition of the work of Annie Swynnerton, the first woman to be elected an associate of the Royal Academy.
She was born in Buffalo, but made her mark in New York City in the 1950s, at a
time when few thought about
buying original contemporary
art.

Arts patron Agnes Gund sold the Roy Lichtenstein painting, Masterpiece, 1962, for $ 165 million in order to establish the new
Art for Justice fund for criminal justice reform with the aim of reducing mass incarceration, reported Robin Pogrebin for the New York
Times,
Art collector Steven A. Cohen
bought the painting through Acquavella Galleries of New York in January 2017, reported NYT.
«I was
buying pieces with my husband, and at that
time we didn't have room for many things, and when I began to pull work out of storage, I said to myself, «Oh my God, really everything is Minimalist,»» said Ms. de Gunzburg, who said she was drawn to Dia because of its roots in the Minimalist and Conceptualist
art of the 1960s and 1970s.
