athlete is able to fall asleep within 20 minutes of getting in bed, sleeps through the night, awakens easily at the
wake - up
time, and does not usually need to sleep in on weekends (i.e., does not need to catch up on sleep since they are well rested every night).
At this
time of day, however, many
athletes often fail to perform at their best due to their sleep -
wake cycle.
Having a back up alarm in the morning is important, so that the
athlete wakes up in
time for their warm up, especially if the
time zone makes it difficult to
wake up in the first couple days of a meet.
Another common sleep problem that
athletes have is
waking up at the exact same
time every night.
Though many
athletes wake for the day to train during this
time I've often heard someone say, «I can't sleep past 5 am no matter what», or «It's like I'm just wide awake at 6 am even though I don't need to get up until 7 ″.
