There are many types of gauge, but they all essentially work the same way and fit a standardized
tire valve stem.
Not exact matches
Somehow the
valve stem on the left rear
tire broke off, causing the
tire to go flat.
Most
tire pressure gauges have a small dot or bead on the backside that is designed to be pressed into the center of the
valve stem, releasing air.
Press the
tire gauge against the
valve stem in a swift motion, making a «flat» connection that seals completely.
Usually when mounting
tires you replace the
valve stem, on in - wheel
tire pressure monitors you replace the nut, schaeder
valve, and gasket.
Direct (dTPMS) systems, where a sensor in the
tire or on the
valve stem measures the air pressure (and maybe also temperature) in the
tire and transmits the data to the car over a wireless link.
Upon arriving, I went ahead and had the
tire replaced (the mechanic wouldn't repair a
tire with fix - a-flat) but on my return journey home, about 50 or so miles outside of New Orleans, the TPMS went off again and did so intermittently until I got to Hattiesburg, MS.. There I stopped at a mechanic and they tightened my
valve stem.

The impact damaged a
valve stem on the left - rear
tire, forcing Chilton to head for the pit lane.
Unscrew the
valve cap on the
tire, and evenly apply the gauge onto the
valve stem.
Common problems:
Tire pressure sensor
valve stems can break off due to corrosion; the repair is not very expensive.
Corroded
valve stems of the
tire pressure sensors can cause
tires to lose air.
They found nothing in
tire so thought it was the
valve stem, replaced it.

After the service was supposedly completed, the same wheel &
tire was missing the
valve stem cap.
