In this article, I propose that the Kindle Popular Highlights database contains evidence that readers are re-appropriating commonplacing — the act
of selecting important
passages from a text and recording them in a separate location for later re-use — while
reading public domain
titles on the Kindle.
This data, ranging from the obvious things like
titles purchased to the more obscure data on how long consumers
read certain
passages, how much time was spent interacting with different sections
of books, and how much
of a book was finished, can be used for very real world information gathering.
Titles that have the
read to me option also let you pick a
passage of text and play just that
passage to hear the words.
Other useful, though not new, features onboard include Goodreads, which helps narrow down your preferences after rating books on your Want to
Read list; Kindle FreeTime, which creates profile for kids so you can set reading goals for them; Whispersync, so you can save and pick up from where you last read across all of your Kindle devices and apps; X-ray, an option that reveals the passages in a book that mention relevant ideas, characters, or other topics; and About This Book, which provides details like the author's bio, more books from an author, and the typical time it takes to read the ti
