We have been without a dog on our lives now for over a year and wanted to adopt instead
of going to a breeder.
The more engaged someone is in adopting a pet — either
by going to a breeder or rescue — the more invested they are in caring for them.
We always knew rescue pets were the best around, but most folks

I have a Lab from a CH / MH sire and a dam from a dual - purpose kennel — his breeder certainly cares about both the breed standard and the performance standard, and while I don't know what my next Lab will come from, I know I wouldn't

stop going to breeders just because they can't go to one from inside L.A. I've gotten three dogs from breeders and none of them were from inside L.A. I also have 2 rescues.
If you're looking for a Chihuahua, (or any other breed for that matter) try adopting instead
of going to a breeder.
However, there is a third option if you decide not to jump through the hoops that a shelter wants or having to
go to a breeder in order to bring home a canine companion.
I know my family has always gone to the shelter first and has always seen what dogs they have to offer there
before going to a breeder or a friend who has an unwanted animal.

I've rescued 4 dogs over the years, & I wotldn't even think of
going to a breeder or Pet store after seeing so many dogs waiting for someone to be rescued.
If
you go to a breeder, do some research to ensure she's reputable.
Most of these breeds probably make good pets if
you go to a breeder who is dedicated to keeping the breed to exact standards.
Don't just take the breeder's word that they are reputable —
go to the breeder, meet the puppy's parents, inspect the dogs» living conditions and ask for referrals from owners who have purchased dogs from them in the past.
Also, because of the Internet, more and more people are purchasing kittens from longer distances, so it may not be possible to
go to a breeder's home.
There are thousands of pets for adoption and it makes sense that you should look into this option before
you go to a breeder.
If you do choose to
go to a breeder, then try to view both parents, to determine the puppies personality.
