I think the problem was: I tried softening the cream cheese first and then adding the eggs and beating, but since the eggs were cold from the fridge, they
just hardened the cream cheese back up and it led to lumps.

harden the Cream in shipping, so if arrives too cold, you may need let it return to room temp before using.
