I frequently
hear church people say that people are poor and homeless because that's what they have chosen.
So when people in the pews
hear their church leaders espouse this same ideal, that we should be cautious about political partisanship (generously stated), I'm not convinced the people are sophisticated enough to know that they aren't being (or shouldn't be) told to abandon positions on issues that are thought out and held up against the light of scripture.
They also insisted that if I wanted to be in God's good books, I should make the sign of the cross every time I walked by a church or
heard the church bell ring.
Thus, the Catechism may say one thing but, if the parish priest says something else, then that is what the people
hear the Church saying.
At least two generations of Catholics in our pews on a Sunday have
not heard the Church's teaching on sex and loving.
I have
heard church members remark that if the sermon makes them laugh or cry, they feel as if they have worshiped.
I
once heard a church - planting organization say that it tells its church plants not to get involved in orphan care because orphan care is a distraction from the church's mission, especially when the church is small or not yet well established.
It should hardly seem unexpected or out of place that, from time to time, one would
hear Church teaching articulated from the pulpit there.
