Climate change is driven by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, which
release carbon dioxide into the air, causing global warming.
Some 15 % of global carbon emissions result from deforestation and forest degradation,
which releases carbon dioxide to the atmosphere as trees are destroyed.
While it is true that planting more trees will help in the short term because they essentially soak up carbon, they
also release carbon dioxide when they die.
A carbon tax is a way — the only way — to make users of carbon fuels pay for the climate damage caused
by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Therefore the production of energy from
biomass releases carbon dioxide into the air — unlike the use of other renewable energy sources such as solar or wind.
Tests of gas levels in blood flowing to and from the replacement organs showed that they were taking in oxygen and
releasing carbon dioxide at 95 % of normal efficiency.
When one of its
samples released carbon dioxide after being heated to a high temperature, scientists knew for certain that the sample contained calcium carbonate.
Coal - fired power plants work hard to heat and cool homes, but burning
coal releases carbon dioxide that will need to be managed in the future.
Fewer trees mean not only a weakening of the forest's ability to absorb carbon, but the decay of dead trees will also
release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere.
With CCS, instead
of releasing carbon dioxide from oil and gas operations into the atmosphere, where the emissions contribute to global warming, that CO2 is converted into liquid and pumped underground to be sequestered indefinitely in porous rock formations.
Clean coal technology does
not release carbon dioxide into the air, instead using carbon capture and storage (CCS) to collect the gas, concentrate it, and pump it deep underground for permanent storage in natural geologic formations.
Deforestation is another significant source of greenhouse gases, as exposed
soils release carbon dioxide, and fewer trees mean less carbon dioxide conversion to oxygen.
Compared to the atmospheric oxygen content of about 21 % this decrease is very small and has no impact on health; however, it provides independent evidence that the rise in CO2 must be due to an oxidation process, that is, fossil fuel combustion and / or organic carbon oxidation, and is not caused by volcanic emissions or a warming
ocean releasing carbon dioxide (CO2 is less soluble in warm water than cold).
When these trees are cut down or they burn, the peat soils underneath are exposed,
releasing carbon dioxide as the peat oxidizes and decomposes.
No more dangerous than breathing in your own kitchen, since the act of
breathing releases carbon dioxide and water into the air... Were you thinking about carbon monoxide, and not carbon dioxide?
By
releasing carbon dioxide higher in the atmosphere, airplanes allow the molecule more time to trap heat, also contributing via contrails and other chemically active gases, the IPCC notes.
And even though
biofuels release carbon dioxide when they are burned, the organisms they are made from draw an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide from the air — making biofuels essentially carbon - neutral.
Co-author Professor Hamid Al - Megren, from the Materials Research Institute at KACST, said: «This is an exciting development — it will allow society to utilise fossil fuels or renewable - derived wax to generate on - board hydrogen for fuel cell applications
without releasing any carbon dioxide into the air.»
That deep water is not only rich in nutrients, it also has relatively high concentrations of carbon dioxide, both because it is cold (cold water can absorb and hold more carbon dioxide than warm water) and because the decomposition of organic matter that sinks into the
depths releases carbon dioxide.
What's more, felled trees, the decomposing debris left behind on the forest floor and the large amounts of sawdust produced at
sawmills release carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere.
