In this example, we chose to use a couple of coats of white spray paint and
then sand it down to give it a more rustic and distressed look.
Just sand it down a little to make a smooth surface and then paint with chalkboard paint.
However since the seat of the bench was flaking a bit, I
did sand it down to smooth it out.

try sanding it down first — as long is there aren't a bunch of coats one on top of the other, I think it should be fine!
Whereas I tend to be very straight with my paintings except for the whole series of black paintings where I really repainted them over and over and then
sanded them down in order to make an extremely impenetrable surface that looks kind of like Formica sometimes.
The glue dries quickly and you can cut the all the plugs with a flush trim saw and
sand it down smooth with minimal if any filling needed.
