The
antibiotic tobramycin kills outer layers of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms (top, red) but leaves a colony (in green) behind to re-seed an infection.
They set up a panel of S. aureus cultures, exposed them to molecules secreted by 14 different P. aeruginosa strains, and then tested the susceptibility of each culture to one of three antibiotics: vancomycin,
tobramycin, and ciprofloxacin.
Some strains of P. aeruginosa, as expected, significantly reduced S. aureus's susceptibility to
tobramycin and ciprofloxacin.
Description: Aminoglycoside antibiotics such as streptomycin, gentamicin, neomycin, paromomycin, kanamycin, spectinomycin, amikacin, netilmicin and
tobramycin have been widely used to treat bacterial infection.
Any topical broad spectrum ophthalmic solution should be acceptable (e.g.,
tobramycin or ofloxacin).
Tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given digoxin (Lanoxin), steroids (such as prednisone), other blood pressure medications, Amikacin, gentamicin,
tobramycin, salicylates such as aspirin (Vetrin), or indomethacin.
Chronic and recurrent infections of the inner and middle ear Overzealous cleaning of the ears Trauma from head injury Stroke Tumors Polyps Meningoencephalitis Hypothyroidism Drugs like the aminoglycoside antibiotics, including amikacin, gentamicin, neomycin and
tobramycin.
Pseudomonas spp had the greatest susceptibility to
tobramycin, gentamicin, polymyxin B, and amikacin (Gerding et al., 1988).
Coagulase - positive Staphylococcus spp were most susceptible to cephalothin, gentamicin, bacitracin, and
tobramycin, whereas coagulase - negative Staphylococcus spp had susceptibility to bacitracin, cephalothin, and gentamicin.
In dogs with gram - negative rods, polymyxin B and chloramphenicol (Peiffer et al., 1984), gentamicin,
tobramycin or carbenicillin (Bistner, 1980) have been recommended.
The following prescription antibiotics benefit pets with bacterial ear infections (otitis) but are not safe unless the eardrum is intact: gentamycin (Otomax and Mometamax),
tobramycin, amikacin, neomycin (Posatex Otic Suspenion) and polymixin B.
