The applanation
tonometry of the femoral artery was an applicable technique in dogs.

Instead
of a detailed waveform required with
tonometry, their method needs just the shape
of a patient's pulse wave for the mathematical model, called intrinsic frequency, to calculate key variables related to the phases
of the patient's heartbeat.
Current measurement methods include MRI, which is expensive and often not feasible, or
tonometry, which requires two pressure measurements and an electrocardiogram to match the phases
of the two pressure waves.
This includes a complete ophthalmic examination
of both eyes, using slit lamp biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy and
Tonometry (measures pressures
of the eyes).
Ophthalmology: We offer several diagnostics for the eye, including staining to diagnose corneal ulcers,
tonometry for ocular pressures, and Schirmer Tear Testing to assess the eye's ability to produce an adequate number
of tears.
Dr. Wisnewski has additional equipment for indepth eye tests including
tonometry (eye pressure screening for glaucoma), slit lamp exam
of eye structures and lenses for retinal exams.
Specialized tests and diagnostics include slit lamp biomicroscopy, gonioscopy,
tonometry (measurement
of intraocular pressure), electroretinogram or ERG (a specialized test
of retinal function), high - frequency ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
There are 3 methods that are particularly useful in the diagnosis
of glaucoma: (1)
tonometry, (2) gonioscopy, and (3) ophthalmoscopy.
Tonometry - is a procedure that measures the intraocular pressure
of the eyeball and is useful in detecting glaucoma and uveitis.
Gonioscopy,
tonometry, Schirmer tear test, electroretinography, and ultrasonography are not routinely performed; thus, dogs with goniodysgenesis, glaucoma, keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye), early lens luxation / subluxation or some early cases
of progressive retinal atrophy might not be detected without further testing and do not qualify for this type
of exam.
(
Tonometry defines the use
of a specialized instrument to measure intraocular pressure which is vital in the detection
of Glaucoma in our pets.)
Other diagnostic modalities might also be used, depending on the initial examination with the slit - lamp: Schirmer tear test strip to check tear production, fluorescein stain for identification
of corneal ulcers and
tonometry to check intraocular pressure.
Each bullet offers a valuable example
of competency, such as the ability to perform applanation
tonometry (the measurement
of intraocular pressure) and the completion
of the JCAHPO COT (an examination that provides certification for ophthalmic technicians.)
Assist in a wide range
of optical procedures and perform - visual acuities, auto - refractions, ishira color vision, depth perception randot stereo test, retinal photography (visicam), setting phoropter,
tonometry (tonopen), instill eye drops (dilation), and Humphrey visual field screenings (40 - 40, 24 - 2, 10 - 2)
Performed ophthalmological procedures such as tear production testing, topical anesthetic application, fluorescein staining
of the cornea and
tonometry.
