I did not qualify for any government assistance, couldn't get a short - sale to go through, and eventually, after trying everything, just gave up and walked away, with my once excellent credit totally destroyed.

But ultimately I walked away with a bargain, so it's totally reasonable not to get everything you want in that situation.
