All of our students come from a variety of cultures, nationalities, and home environments, and these five techniques that have worked for me might barely scratch the surface of how you interact with
the tough kids in your classroom.

It's an extremely painful day for a lot of full - grown adults who have lost their mothers, and it's even
tougher for little
kids, especially if they're sitting
in the
classroom watching everybody else make popsicle stick frames for the moms they all still have.
We also need to acknowledge that teaching is one of the
toughest jobs around, and that it's not fair to our
kids to allow ineffective teachers to stay
in the
classroom year after year.
It's not news that some children have a
tough if not impossible time learning
in the typical
classroom environment, and that, as they accumulate failures, they cease to believe (if they ever did)
in their ability to do what the
kid sitting next to them seems to do with ease.
Just curious - since teaching is so easy and everyone is an expert on how to do it - suppose Arne Duncan were to take over a
classroom of impoverished
kids in a
tough city school.
We need to ensure that developing teachers get meaningful feedback, and we also need to acknowledge that teaching is one of the
toughest jobs around, and that it's not fair to our
kids to allow ineffective teachers to stay
in the
classroom year after year.
Other training options include additional training days for advanced
Tough Kid strategies and / or training for special audiences (e.g., school leadership, behavior specialists, teachers of students
in special education who are
in self - contained
classrooms or have EBD diagnoses, etc.).
They must become active players
in shaping education for their children, ask
tough, thoughtful questions about what is being taught
in classrooms, demand information on the quality of the teachers working
in classrooms, and play stronger roles
in shaping the overhauls of traditional district schools (and
in the operations of charter schools serving their
kids).

kids who are often
in tough situations, and the
kids can bring that same toughness into the
classroom.
