trace metals from food webs.»
A University of Oklahoma Civil Engineering and Environmental Science Professor Robert Nairn and his co-authors have conducted a collaborative study that suggests exposure to
trace metals from potatoes grown in soil irrigated with waters from the Potosi mining region in Bolivia, home to the world's largest silver deposit, may put residents at risk of non-cancer health illnesses.

• Safe: free of disease - causing microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, spores); heavy
metals; chemicals
from industry and agriculture; pharmaceuticals; disinfectants and related by - products; radioactivity; and synthetic fluoride; • Fresh: neither salty nor stagnant; • Clean: physically, biologically and chemically; • Natural: coming
from a pristine mountain stream, glacial river or fresh spring; • Hydrating: water with low surface tension and thus better hydrating; • Mineral balanced: contains a wide variety of minerals including
trace minerals, excellent ionic activity (Total Dissolved Solids ~ 300 ppm), including cations such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium; and anions such as nitrate, chloride, bicarbonate, sulfate and carbonate.
Analysis of clays
from Africa, Sardinia and California reveals that clay can provide a variety of macro - and
trace minerals including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and zinc.2 Clay also contains aluminum, but silicon, present in large amounts in all clays, prevents absorption of this toxic
metal and actually helps the body eliminate aluminum that is bound in the tissues.3
For those suffering
from lead or other heavy
metal poisoning, a protective diet that avoids processed foods and emphasizes the central components of a nutrient - dense and antioxidant - rich WAPF - style diet is essential (see sidebar).21 Nutritional status shapes susceptibility to lead toxicity in important ways, affecting lead's intestinal absorption; its mobilization, distribution and retention in the body; and excretion.22 Because oxidative stress is a likely mechanism explaining some of lead's toxic actions, some investigators have begun to explore whether natural antioxidants and
trace minerals may help mitigate lead - induced cell damage.17 Specifically, researchers in Spain found that administration of vitamins A, B6, C and E along with zinc modulated some of the negative effects of lead exposure in rat pups, confirming the influence of nutritional factors on health outcomes following lead exposure.17 Vitamin D also should be a major component of a protective diet.
