While I suggest new investors always buy diverse funds like an S&P 500 index fund to start, if you are building a larger
portfolio and want to try your skill picking individual
stocks, it is important to keep
track of your investments.
As you probably know I am huge believer in index funds and 80 %
of my Millennial Money
portfolio is invested in funds that
track the domestic and international
stock indexes.

I doubt that anyone has ever told you this before, but the «average» return for a category
of funds — whether a large subset like diversified
stock funds or a narrower one like small - company growth —
tracks only the performance
of the
portfolios that survived all the way from the beginning
of the measurement period to the end.

For those new to the site, I
track a high yield / low payout
portfolio using Dividend Champion
stocks (
stocks with a history
of raising dividends 25 + years).
Arguably a pretty conservative investment approach, the historical performance
of the Coffeehouse
portfolio has been strong over time — generating 5 % + over the past 10 years, but it still falls short when compared to investing in a total
stock market index fund or S&P 500 fund that
track those market indexes.
The primary focus
of my
portfolio is in three categories supported by Vanguard funds (VFINX to
track the S&P 500, NAESX to
track small cap
stocks, and VGTSX as a broad international fund).
We plan to continue to
track the market value
of our dividend
stock holdings as well as the annual income
of our dividend growth
stock portfolio throughout time.
I actually still do have a small amount
of money in individual
stocks; 98 %
of my
stock portfolio is in indexes and mutual funds; and for that 2 % portion
of my
portfolio in individual
stocks, I do my best to keep
track of what goes on.

The orange line

tracks stocks that pay the lowest 30 %
of dividend yields, and the green line
tracks stocks in the highest 30 % yield group.
Much like on the Canadian graph, each line
tracks a different
portfolio of stocks and each
portfolio was rebalanced annually.
He
tracked a model
portfolio containing 30
stocks with the lowest acquirer's multiples on the TSX excluding financials, utilities, and tiny nano - cap
stocks with the lowest 5 %
of market capitalizations.
Of these, four are currently held in the Model Shadow
