The 2018 Nismo GT3 racer measures 4,832 mm long with a 2,817 mm wheelbase, 2,306 mm wide, with front and rear
track widths at 1,690 mm and 1,700 mm respectively.
It is also 55 millimetres wider than the BMW 135i Coupe: the width of 1,803 millimetres is the result and the expression of
a track width at the front and rear axle optimised to enhance driving dynamics in a way which is specific to this model.
Additionally, the wheelbase is now longer, and combined with a wider
track width at the front, offers the new car improved tracking and roll stability at high longitudinal and cornering speeds.
Not exact matches
The
tracks were 100 to 1,000 times as long as the
widths of the particles, and they looked like arrows pointing to the flecks
at the end.
The front suspension is MacPherson type
at the front, torsion beam
at the rear, with wider
track widths (44 mm front, 63 mm rear) than the chassis setup on its 308 hatchback relative.
Slamming on the brakes
at 80 mph (and checking it twice), we were impressed by its quick and steady on - point stops, thanking the Raptor's added
track width, and slickened profile.
The new styling hides some physical growth, too, most significantly in
width —
at 1931 mm it's 64 mm wider than before, and its 1638 mm
track is 123 mm greater than that of the old car.
Its flared rear wheel arches are 57 mm wider than the GT's —
at just over two metres wide the GT C is no slip of a car — while its rear
track width is 44 mm wider than the base model's.
More pressing is that the Octavia's
track width has been increased
at the back to improve stability and more safety kit is available including blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert and predictive pedestrian protection.
We ran a number of simulations and CFD studies comparing the wide versus narrow bodies and looked
at various
track width options.
Reflecting the changes brought to other 911 models, the chassis is completely new, boasting a wheelbase that has increased by 3.9 inches in length
at 96.5 inches and front
track and rear
track widths are also up by 1.9 inches and 1.7 inches
at 60.6 inches and 62.3 inches, respectively — all of which provides a much larger footprint than the superseded model.
As a result, 1.8 - inch -(45 - mm) wider front
track (60.8 in / 1,545 mm) and full 3.1 inches (81 mm) of extra
width at the rear axle (62.7 in / 1,593 mm) promise — even
at a standstill — further improvements in sporty characteristics for which BMW is known.
Track width has increased 40 millimeters (1.57 inches)
at the front and rear compared to series - built models, and the body is 30 millimeters (1.18 inches) higher.
The estate is marginally bigger than the saloon,
at 4,702 mm versus 4,686 mm long and 1,457 mm tall compared to 1,442 mm, but other than that they're largely identical in terms of measurements (the estate has slightly narrower
track widths).
In fact, the extra
width (the
track too is increased by 17 mm front, 25 mm
at the rear) makes the 175/65 R15 tyres (which now sit on larger 15 - inch alloys) look a size too small.

The car also looks more powerful because its overall
width has increased by 17 millimetres to 1,765 millimetres (due to an increase in
track of 51 millimetres
at the front and 72 millimetres
at the rear), whereas its height remains unchanged
at 1,421 millimetres.
The front
track has increased by 7 mm in
width at 1618 mm, while the rear
track is reduced by 4 mm
at 1646 mm.
They used an
ATS - V instead of a V8 CTS - V as a donor because of the
track width.

The
track width increases
at both the front and rear, allowing for up to 30.9 cubic feet of cargo as standard and 59.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
The wheelbase measures 110.6» (2,810 mm), the
track width 60.8» (1,545 mm)
at the front and 62.8» (1,594 mm)
at the rear.
Underpinning the new car is a heavily revised chassis boasting
tracks that have increased by 0.8 inch in
width up front and 0.9
at the rear, new wheel carriers and a larger diameter front roll bar.
The latest M car rides on a largely bespoke chassis, which features
tracks that are increased in
width by a substantial 64 mm
at the front and 71 mm
at the rear over those used by the current range topping 2 Series model, the M235i,
at 1579 mm and 1601 mm respectively.
At second look we find flared front and rear wheel arches coupled with an increased
track width and larger wheels.
It's 14 mm shorter,
at 4671 mm, than the X3, despite sharing the donor car's 2810 mm wheelbase and its fat rear hips do little to hide the 1632 mm rear
track width sprouting from the five - link rear suspension.
And a glance
at the spec sheet only reinforced our initial hesitant impression: The 2006 Eclipse is bigger in all dimensions than the car it replaces: in length (by 2.9 inches),
width (by 3.3), height (by 1.9), wheelbase (by 0.6) and
track (by 2.4).
Test mule sightings from the past several months have revealed that the subcompact's
track and
width may grow slightly, but height, length, and wheelbase won't budge far, if
at all.
Nonetheless, the folks
at AutoExpress point out what looks like a revised front grille shape and an wider - looking
track width, suggesting that the 2017 Ford Fiesta might grow in size for this new generation.
As that outlet points out, this Ford Fiesta - based test mule doesn't just ride higher than the factory subcompact; it's also had its wheelbase lengthened, with extra material tacked
at the C - pillar, and it wears a set of small fender extensions to accommodate a wider
track width.
