The fact is that, though the churches share what I will call a common
tradition about authority, that tradition is in the midst of a severe crisis.
It may also display the common
tradition about authority to a society increasingly in need of its resources and thereby make a contribution to the health of society that is as welcome as it is unexpected.

Many other saintly
authorities could be quoted, but one hopes that this helps to reassure those who, in the current climate of tension, have been made nervous and perhaps over cautious
about what truly belongs to the orthodox
tradition of the Church.

about what we should do is explicitly based on reason, experience, and empathy and respect for others, rather than on
tradition or deference to
authority.
