Schooled at the prestigious Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig under the supervision of painter Sighard Gille (who is mostly known for his Song of Life, a monumental ceiling fresco of vibrant colors in the city's Gewandhaus Orchestra), Tobias Lehner (1974, Regensburg) first mastered the craft
of traditional figurative painting before turning to abstraction.
It's hard to characterize the art produced in Bushwick: there are endless studios of artists producing forms of
traditional figurative painting while countless others are experimenting with digital images — some older talents but mostly younger ones.
Their titles may be provocative — one of his new works on show here is called The Same Old Crap — but Shaw's work is as close to
traditional figurative painting as the Turner Prize gets.
His subjects hover
between traditional figurative painting and portraiture, with subjects often seemingly caught in an interrupted moment, as if the sitter has just realized the artist's presence.
All of these elements -
