Despite the introduction of the Professional Skills Tests
in these
subjects that all
trainee teachers must pass before their training, the demand for well qualified
teachers in primary and secondary schools
in these vital
subjects continues and their under ‑ recruitment is already evident
in some schools.
As this will be there third year that some
subjects have not met the government's target number needed to enter training, as identified by the DfE's
Teacher Supply Model, the shortfall will extent to the loss of a whole cohort of
trainees in subject such as design and technology, business studies and physics over the three year period.
He said: «There are very generous bursaries
in some areas and we should look at making them available to all
trainee teachers, not just for those with first - class degrees
in particular
subjects... It is right to incentivise recruitment
in particular
subjects but there is a case for across - the - board bursaries, because we want good people applying
in all
subjects.»
LEARNING FROM OTHER SECTORS Professor John Howson, chair of the REC's Education Steering Group has argued that «the increase
in pupil numbers and decline
in trainee teacher numbers heralds a period when recruitment will become more of a challenge, especially
in certain
subjects and phases».
Almost twice as many
trainees in geography, for example, are needed next year, while the demand for new
teachers in creative
subjects will fall by up to 11 per cent
in some cases.
«Despite a tightening labour market,
trainee teacher recruitment is holding steady - with low vacancy rates
in priority
subjects like maths and science.

in recruiting
trainee teachers of the right calibre, newly qualified
teachers in specialist

Researchers
in Schools is the second programme from The Brilliant Club, aimed at widen access to highly selective universities for under - represented groups by placing PhD holders as
trainee teachers in schools, promoting
subject expertise and research
in the classroom, and championing higher education.
The chart below shows this trend over the past three years, with demand for
teacher trainees in EBacc
subjects rising but the number of new
trainees unable to keep up.
The report also calls for better mathematics mentoring for
trainee and newly qualified
teachers at both primary and secondary level, with
subject experts based

subjects, notably languages, maths and the sciences, were still struggling to find
teacher trainees and it said fewer of the
trainees in these
subjects went on to become
teachers.
As non-resident aliens, international students on F, J, M and Q visas (and certain family members of students) are not
subject to the individual mandate for their first 5 years
in the U.S.. All other J categories (
teacher,
trainee, work and travel, au pair, high school, etc.) are not
subject to the individual mandate for 2 years (out of the past six).
