transfer at one time, Starwood will
give you another 5,000 airline

Given that you get a 25 percent bonus for every 20,000
miles you
transfer, you're basically earning 6.25 and 1.25 points per dollar, which is impressive.
Transfers to the other major domestic airlines
give you a 1.25 cents per point value so don't
transfer to United, because if you do you will be bummed when you realize those Starpoints don't cover the United
miles needed.
You can buy United MileagePlus
miles,
transfer them to another account or
give them to someone.
Every time you buy,
transfer or
give miles, your account expiration date resets.
United will keep a record of your cumulate
transfers and
give you a bonus based on the total number of
miles you end up receiving on their end.
Finally, there are a few travel rewards programs that
give you the option of
transferring your points to airline
miles and hotel points.
Etihad
miles are relatively easy to accumulate,
given that the program is a
transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, and Starwood Preferred Guest (all at a 1:1
transfer ratio).
All this said, it's still a good thing to see banks adding more
transfer partners because it
gives us more flexibility when it comes to using our
miles.

Long story short: if I had to settle on just one credit card to earn
miles / points, I would definitely go with one of those that earn points that

transferring those points into a variety of air and hotel rewards programs.
These can be especially attractive because you don't
give up the chance to use your points for free nights, but you still get some
miles that count toward a
transfer bonus.
British Airways is offering a 50 %
transfer bonus directly from American Express, which would have
given me more
miles than I could get by
transferring to US Airways, BUT flying from Anchorage makes the deal worthless.
Kathy, as you noted, American Express also passes along this cost when you
transfer Membership Reward points to a U.S. airline, since American Express has had to pay that tax to the airline when it bought the
miles that it is
giving to you.
So this card could
give you 35,000
miles (after you hit the minimum spend) to
transfer to a ton of different airlines.
That doesn't sound much if you think of it in terms of Amtrak
miles, but if you
transfer these points into the Choice Privileges program at 1:3 ration, that can
give you up to four nights in Europe.
Since it's a
transfer partner of both American Express and Citi, it's not hard to rack up tons of
miles and thus this 35K + 25K offer for the Cathay Pacific credit card can
give you a nice head start in reaching your next goal.
Not only could she easily requalify and earn a bunch of redeemable
miles, but she could also
transfer SPG Starpoints to Aegean to
give her account a boost.
The ability to
transfer your
miles to numerous airlines and the flexibility that
gives you is the best feature of the card.
There have been multiple AMEX to British Airway
transfer bonuses recently which would have
given you 50 % more
miles with British Airways.
Transferring 19,000 Starpoints will
give you 57,000 Marriott points, and 56,000 Marriott points are worth 25,000 United
miles.
