Today I'll kick off a new series that looks at each of the three major
transferable point currencies and analyzes the best way to redeem for coach award flights.
They are the bank's
transferable points currency: Chase Ultimate Rewards points.
One particularly interesting option is JAL, as SPG is the only

the transferable points currencies.

That way I then have
a transferable points currency vs. my points being stuck in United.

ThankYou Points are one of the four major
transferable points currencies and as such are pretty valuable to frequent travelers.
Not only that, but I think of cash as another type of
transferable points currency.
And as
transferable points currencies go, I prefer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Citi ThankYou points since it transfers to additional travel partners that I find useful: Singapore KrisFlyer, which Citi ThankYou points also transfer to, and also Korean SkyPass, British Airways Avios, United MileagePlus and Hyatt Gold Passport, among others.
We're seeing some programs that also partner with other
transferable points currencies, like Air France / KLM Flying Blue and Etihad Guest.

The card earns Membership Rewards
points, the
currency in Amex's loyalty program, which can be exchanged for statement credits or cash back, used to book travel through Amex's travel website, or, to get the most value, transferred to any of 17 airline and three hotel transfer partners (
transferable points are among the best).
There are a few reasons, including travel and purchase protections and other perks, but from a rewards perspective, Chase's cards are particularly valuable because of the type of rewards
currency they earn:
transferable points.

Points often seem to fly under the radar compared to more well - known
transferable currencies such as Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards.
I'd rather store them elsewhere where I can get better value on my redemptions — or even earn
points with a
transferable currency like Citi, Chase, or American Express» reward programs, so I can transfer them to any carrier where I can get a fantastic first or business class award.

currencies — Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou, American Express Membership Rewards and Starwood's Starpoints and, as a follow up to those articles, I'm now taking a look at the best ways to earn the four
transferable loyalty
currencies and hopefully giving you some idea of what you can do to earn more
points and to boost your balances quickly and / or frequently.
Here's a few stories in the
points and miles world that I found interesting: Barclays is finally getting into the
transferable currency game.
The way I try to protect myself from airline devaluations is by concentrating my credit card earnings on
transferable currencies like Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou
Points, American Express Membership Rewards
Points and Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints.
Most importantly, all the credit cards I've listed above earn
transferable currencies (they can be moved to a number of other loyalty programs) while the
points earned thought the Marriott Rewards credit card are really only of any use at Marriott properties....
The ability to earn a fixed two

currency is unique in the rewards credit card industry.

You've heard us preach time and time again that
transferable currencies are the best way to get started in the
points and miles hobby.
I get the overwhelming majority of my Hyatt
points via transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards and, as I much prefer to hold
transferable currency balances than balances with individual loyalty programs, I rarely large number of
points in my Hyatt account.
Flying Blue has become more and more relevant for US - based travelers as it has gradually become a transfer partner for all three of the major
transferable currencies in the US — Amex Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou
Points and, as of last month, Chase Ultimate Rewards — so any positive changes to the program are very welcome.
Membership Rewards
points are one of the original
transferable loyalty
currencies, and they often promote different partners with limited time promotions.
Usually the best value you can get from these
points is to, as is usually the case with all
transferable reward
currencies, transfer them into airline programs for award flights.
but that's in comparison to what they're like today and not in comparison to
transferable currencies like Membership Rewards, ThankYou
points or Ultimate Rewards.
It can allow members like me to keep our
points in the form of
transferable currencies until we're 100 % sure that our plans are not going to change while at the same time locking up award space that may otherwise disappear.
Virgin Atlantic is a transfer partner of all three major
transferable bank
currencies (Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou
points and Amex Membership Rewards) as well as being a transfer partner of Starwood's Starpoints so it's not hard to top up a Flying Club account.
While it's always good news to see a
transferable currency like ThankYou
Points get another transfer partner I can't get excited about this.
If you have
points in a
transferable currency program such as Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, or Starwood Preferred Guest, you're in luck!!
You also can't book the Suites using any
currency other than Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (although as mentioned you can transfer
points in from all major
transferable currencies).
Then there's
transferable currencies, mainly Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou
Points, and Starwood Preferred Guest.
This is easily the highest number of airline partners of any
transferable currency and compares favorably to other
transferable points programs, such as Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards.
While this card will never offer the outsized value possible with
transferable currencies, it is useful for redemptions when the cents per
point value of other cards would be relatively low.
So your Chase Ultimate Rewards
points, your Citi Thank You
points, your American Express Membership Rewards
points and your Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG)
points can all be sent over to Singapore Airlines (transfer times vary by
transferable currency).
What this means is that anyone can get these
points when the time comes by opening a few different credit cards with good signup bonuses and the
points will all transfer over — as long as it's one of the
transferable currencies I mentioned.
One reason I increasingly value credit card rewards
points is the «
transferable» nature of these
currencies.
This is a great offer as Starpoints are arguably the most valuable
transferable currency (See our Reasonable Redemption Values for
point valuations and more on our methodologies).
When it comes to travel rewards,
transferable points like Amex Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards — which you accrue in a central account and can then transfer to a number of airline, hotel and other partner programs — are among the most valuable
points currencies out there.
