But last night i sent an email to our elementary school principal asking for permission to send out my own survey to quantify parents» views
on birthday treats and food rewards, as well as chocolate milk and a la carte junk food in the cafeteria.
So, given the centrality of the
birthday treat issue
on The Lunch Tray, it was with great delight that I read this message sent to me last week by a friend and TLT reader:
Moms simply volunteer more often to chaperone field trips, organize school functions, and bring
treats for
birthday parties, and that's
on top of being full - time in the workforce.
Sort of what I tried to tell you when you set out
on a nationwide crusade to ban the time honored custom of kids handing out
birthday treats.
Taught by the media and radical feminists to be ashamed about their maternal, nurturing and intuitive side, mothers are too often afraid to follow and act
on their intuition even though it tells them that a youth sports system which too often emphasizes winning and competition over fun and skill development,
treats children as young as six as adults and cruelly and unfairly saddles so many as failures before they have even reached puberty because they weren't lucky enough to be «early bloomers» or have a January
birthday, is not the kind of nurturing, caring and, above all, inclusive environment mothers believe their children need to grow into confident, competent, empathetic, emotionally and psychologically healthy adults.

on the district (as you so nicely put it) as they are beginning to create policies that parallel the healthy eating standards they are already trying to teach the children by eliminating junk food as a way to celebrate
birthdays and opt for healthy
treats or goodie bags instead.
I don't recall that my own mother let me bring
treats to school
on my
birthdays, but some children did.
My daughter attends a school where they celebrate all the
birthdays for the month
on one day and they bring a non cupcake
treat.
Second of all, I spoke with the principal last week, and apparently it is
on the district's agenda as of last year to change the
birthday celebration
treat options.
And I didn't stop there — I wrote about banning
birthday treats for my local free newspaper, I guest posted about it
on The Wellness Bitch, and I was even quoted

Treats are great at your
birthday or special occasions, but for my every day life, I'm focusing
on consuming fewer calories.
Maybe (as is the case in my own home) I really love giving my kid
treats (see above re: cupcake love) but when my kid comes home full of your
treats (and in our school it's not uncommon, especially in late spring, for TWO families to send
treats on a single day to celebrate upcoming summer
birthdays), then I'm either preempted by you or we have to exceed what I consider a reasonable amount of sugar.
