during the period 1973 - 1990, with the largest
trends in the tropics, where increases as large as 13 % per
decade were found.
The upward
trend of the AMO SST index
during recent decades coincides with the observed accelerated SLR along the US northeast coast.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the
trend agrees in sign but is of smaller amplitude than that observed
