There have been some studies looking into whether probiotics can prevent or treat
food allergies, but the results have been mixed and the
trials have mainly been in vitro and / or
on animal models.
If you have ever had a dog who had a
food sensitivity / intolerance or
food allergy then you likely know what a real «limited ingredient» dog
food is, especially if you have worked with a veterinarian
on weeks or months of
food trials or, in the old days, had to make your dog's
food because dog
food companies didn't make specialty dog
foods yet.
For instance, the
allergy tests available are not terribly good at determining
food allergies, and therefore instead of identifying a specific
food and avoiding it, we instead recommend feeding a prescription hypoallergenic diet
on a strict
trial basis (feed this and nothing else), while gauging to see how your pet responds.

food trial shows that you dog has
allergies, you can start your dog
on homemade or commercial
food and then add ingredients one at a time to try and determine exactly what
food caused the reaction.
While your pup is
on his limited diet of
food containing rabbit and potato, don't give him extra treats or table scraps that could contain ingredients to set off his
food allergies, rendering his
food trial useless.
If we suspect that
food may be a contributing factor to your pet's
allergy / ies, then we will work with you
on a
food elimination
trial to check the effect of
food on their itching.
Another example might be a pet
on a
food elimination
trial to identify
food allergies.
To determine whether your pooch is experiencing a
food allergy you will be advised to place your dog
on an exclusion diet controlled
trial.
Next, the patient should be placed
on a hypoallergenic
food trial, to rule out
allergy to ingested protein sources.
If your dog has chronic, year - round
allergies, it may be pertinent to place him
on a
food trial.
If you suspect your pet has an
allergy or
food intolerance, get some advice from your veterinarian
on how to do a proper
food trial and formulate a nutritionally balanced diet.
If his or her skin improves while
on the
food trial, he or she would likely stay
on that
food long - term, thereby controlling the
allergy symptoms.

trial, this is indicative that they have
food allergies.
The only way to determine if the cat has a
food allergy is to put the cat
on a
trial diet that the cat could not possibly be allergic to (either a hydrolyzed protein diet or a novel protein diet) for a long period of time and see if the mowing stops.
