I was lucky enough to have a
professional truffle hunter, Goose the black lab, and his owner Kelly, lead us to find wild truffles in this forest a few winters ago.
We are strolling through the woods
with truffle hunter Mirko Illice and his little dog, Clinto.
First we pulled up to Le Cos - Piguet, where a spirited and well - trained
canine truffle hunter, Chinook, and his owner, Olivier Devevre, greeted us then led us up a gentle hill to a fenced - off orchard where the magic happens.
These dogs were so closely guarded because of their work
as truffle hunters that they are practically unknown.
So you'll have the bichon frise»; a lap dog that was bred for precious pampering, but is too big to be categorized in the toy group, the poodle; a versatile breed that was utilized as a retriever,
truffle hunter and then circus performer, and then you have two types of bulldogs; breeds who were once used for bull baiting, but since this practice has been outlawed, they technically can't be categorized under the working dog category.
The Lagotto, with its remarkable nose and strong desire to do
the truffle hunter's bidding, was guarded closely for centuries.
Reminiscent of a past as water dogs and
truffle hunters, Lagottos love to play in the water or mud and enjoy digging.
The Miniature Poodle was bred from the Standard Poodle and, like its larger ancestor, was first used in France as a water fowl retriever and
a truffle hunter.
