There are
some truly excellent films making their world premieres at the festival, a number of which we profiled in our preview series (part 1 part 2 part 3).
It fits in nicely with his recent output, all of which have been good to very good, although I wager he hasn't done
a truly excellent film since MUNICH.

Equipped with a
truly excellent villain (Marcel Iures), a charismatic cast and a talented visual director, this is one of those
films that you can genuinely enjoy as long as you don't analyze or think too hard into what is going on.
The
film is anchored by two
excellent central performances; normally known for stand - up comedy, Dave Johns as the titular character delivers solid work in his
film debut but it's Hayley Squires as the single mother of two who finds herself in some devastating circumstances that
truly captures your heart.
With or without filmmaking tricks, the momentum of the first half of the
film leading up to the beginning of the Games is
truly excellent.
This is the BEST James Bond
film ever made as it is full of style, amazing action pieces that really dazzle and entertain, Pierce Brosnan is an
excellent Bond (wit, humor, action, style, brutality), Xenia Onatopp is the greatest creation of a villain and Bond girl (because her weapon is Bond» worst nightmare), the villain is
truly threatening and played very well by Sean Bean, the title song is awesome and classic Bond, the script for this
film is VERY well written and witty, etc..
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation proves that theory by being absolutely fucking
excellent; it is the best
film in this series, and it is a perfectly realized piece of cinematic craftsmanship, one that would make any of the
truly skilled great filmmakers proud.
The
film is hardly immune to the sweaty, rumpled allure of the newsroom, best personified by a lively Hanks and a
truly excellent Bob Odenkirk as Ben Bagdikian, the reporter whose sharp instincts yield most of The Post's genuinely riveting sequences, one of which consists entirely of Bagdikian standing at a bank of pay phones.
A
truly compelling and interesting
film with
excellent pacing and a really smart twist at the end.
This is an
excellent horror
film that manages to deliver some
truly terrifying scares while keeping that tension high and never letting up.
The twist - filled storyline, which digs up nasty secrets all over the show and offers a satisfying range of suspicious suspects and a
truly disgusting killer, remains gripping, and the
excellent, understated lead performances don't harp on the racial angle in that embarassing fashion which makes so many Socialy Significant
films instantly dated.
Very rarely do I leave a horror
film saying the cinematography was
excellent, but it
truly was.
What
truly derails the
film is its court - room / civil rights slant which revolves around Ted trying to become a «real boy» so he and his new wife Tami - Lyn (the
excellent Jessica Barth) can become parents in a bid to save their marriage.
Toni Collette was also fantastic in her small scene in The Hours, John C. Reilly was in four
films and
excellent all around, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moor both doubled up as well, I also enjoyed Tom Hanks in Catch Me If You Can (not his best, but still very good) and Robin Williams also had Insomnia, a
truly surprising performance (I really liked Al Pacino in that one too).
Also, Ledger was
excellent as The Joker and
truly deserved the acclaim - and awards - he got for the
film.»
Other important and positive trends at this year's FEFF and that I will consider further in this report included a very welcome sprinkling of surprisingly arty
films, some of them from Southeast Asia

Between Funny People and the
truly excellent Punch Drunk Love, Sandler has proven he has chops but these crappy little
films he makes are geared by the studios to steal money from who they consider to be their large and unsophisticated audience.
The list of icons making appearances was
truly unprecedented: Superman soars twice — once in the «return» and the other as Ben Affleck; Crockett and Tubbs exude cool; Ethan Hunt falls short; Captain Jack Sparrow sets the stage for the finale; Jack Black sometimes wears stretchy pants; Huey Long is resurrected and somehow over-played by Sean Penn; the mass appeal of the DaVinci Code novel fizzled onscreen; Robert Altman's amazing career ended with an
excellent adaptation of a radio series starring Garrison Keillor's made for radio face; Johnny Depp tried to untrack his career with The Libertine; Nicolas Cage was front and center in the disastrous remake of The Wicker Man, but if the preview is any indication, his sleep - walk was merely a tune - up for this year's Ghost Rider; Woody Allen (with Scarlett Johansson as his muse) re-emerged with his best comedy since Crimes and Misdemeanors; amazingly, Jen and Vince's real life break - up was more entertaining than the
film version; and while on - set hook - ups seem to the norm, how could the dreadful You, Me and Dupree have been an aphrodisiac for Kate and Owen?
Fuqua previously helmed the interminable Tears of the Sun and the
truly excellent Training Day, and the influence of both
films are felt here.
It's worth seeing the
film to watch Chan deliver a powerful and unique performance,
truly doing an
excellent job channeling that darkness he has so often eschewed in other movies, but «The Foreigner» never realizes that this role is its greatest strength and emotional core, and in doing so, ends up becoming a muddled affair that isn't as engaging as it should be.
The story is full of twists and turns and
excellent set pieces, an endless rollercoaster which captures the adventure magic of the Indiana Jones
films, and leaves you
truly satisfied.
