Turbo Until Dawn: Rush

That follows the decision for the 2017 Porsche 911 range to move to all - turbocharged engines, starting with twin -
turbo 3.0 - and 3.4 - liter units in the Carrera and Carrera S. Porsche hasn't given out any specifics on the new Cayman and Boxster engines, but reports suggest that base versions
of the
cars will have a 2.0 - liter mill with around 285 hp, while S models will get a 2.5 - liter
turbo - four cranking out closer to 360 hp.
Cross your fingers it's BMW's N20 2.0 - liter turbocharged four (which powers one
of BMW's existing sports
cars, the Z4 sDrive28i), although the
turbo might be scrapped in favor
of a more futuristic power - adder: electricity.
It's true, that's not very fast compared to really crazy
cars like the Porsche 911
Turbo and the Lamborghini Gallardo Performante, but the Super20 is more nuts than either
of them, because it's a half - baked tuner special that underscores what's wrong with modern
cars.
As before, max torque comes on low, at just 1,600 rpm now, so there's never a feeling
of waiting for
turbo boost to build; the
car just surges forward.
The 335bhp twin -
turbo straight - six starts with a pleasing growl and settles into a rumblelicious idle — good news given the fears that blowers would deny this new breed
of M -
car a memorable voice.
About the only bit
of the original Lotus that remains is the badge, as the
car features a tube - frame chassis and a 2.4 - liter
turbo - four race engine sourced from Honda mated to a sequential manual gearbox.
Chunks
of snow shoot out behind the
car as the tach's needle bounces against redline, the twin -
turbo V - 6 yowling.
Its 300bhp output at 6500rpm didn't match that
of the
Turbo models, but then as now, the Rennsport
cars are all about low weight and dramatic aero.
With direct - injection, a variable - displacement oil pump and variable cam timing, it makes an estimated 150 horsepower and 177 lb - ft
of torque, up 12 hp and 29 lb - ft from the current
car's 1.4 - liter
turbo, and it's mated to an updated six - speed automatic transmission.
The high - strung
turbo engine builds boost fast, but with the manual you can keep the engine on boil more easily, resulting in a
car that feels seriously quick, agile and, best
of all, fun.
He also reveals that the target is to produce a
car that will rival the speed and driver appeal
of the
Turbo without any on - limit trickiness.
That
car used the first iteration
of Audi's Quattro all - wheel - drive system and housed a 160 - hp
turbo five - cylinder under its long hood.
Meanwhile, race -
car designer Ben Bowlby, the man behind the DeltaWing and Nissan ZEOD R / C, confirmed that the next road - going GT - R will feature a version
of the same twin -
turbo, 3.0 - liter V - 6 with hybrid power that propels the Nissan GT - R LM NISMO race
car, which appeared in June's 24 Hours
of Le Mans in France.
The
car is powered by Nissan's new VR family 3.0 - liter twin -
turbo V - 6 rated at 400 hp and 350 lb - ft
of torque paired exclusively to a seven - speed automatic transmission.
On the optional 19 - inch wheels (which replace 18 - inch wheels on the
Turbo; the base
car has different 18 - inch wheels available in place
of its standard 17 - inch footwear), the
Turbo rode pretty stiffly over the bits
of patchy pavement in the grungier parts
of the city.
There's a ton
of turbo lag, but learn to drive around it and the 900 is a very quick
car — and one with surprisingly little torque steer, at least when the steering wheel is pointed straight.
The trapezoidal exhaust tips on this
car have previously denoted the V -8-powered model, so there is a chance that this X5 is packing the 4.4 - liter twin -
turbo V - 8 found in the current
car, or some variant
of it.
The GTS version is almost certainly among the last
of this sort
of car to eschew
turbo or supercharging and it has a particular charm because
of it.
A total
of 11 screens give more information than I've ever seen in a production
car, starting with the mundane oil temperature and pressure,
turbo boost gauge and fuel economy, and ranging up to steering angle, acceleration and braking in percent, AWD torque distribution, and lateral, acceleration and braking g - force.
Though our previous prediction that this
car would be called 500S turned out to be incorrect, we have plenty
of other information on this upcoming model that sits below the 650S and targets higher - end Porsche 911 models like the GT3 and 911
Turbo.
The reason why I didn t bought the Huracan (the
car I loved the most
of all, I loved it more than 911
Turbo and Ferrari) is it has poor visibility.
That brought the total to 530 hp and 434 lb - ft
of torque from its twin -
turbo V6, and made it, in the eyes
of Mizuno, the
car the GT - R was always destined to be.
Add the power
of the
Turbo S and you easily forget how heavy and large this
car is.
Instead, the
Turbo suffers the same busy, stiff - legged hobble
of the base
car.
The
car photographed here is one

The 2013 Tokyo motor show yields plenty
of new performance
cars, including a
turbo Civic Type - R, the Nismo GT - R and a cool new Lexus sports
car
Scanning the SVI's hallways leading from the front offices to multiple build garages at the rear
of their building, I see photos
of old projects; 1989 Corvette ZR - 1 LT - 5 V - 8, the
turbo system for the original Fox - platform Mustang SV0 (circa 1984), and the certified 198 - mph PPG Pace
Car used in the awful movie, The Wraith (1986).
Strangely, the base
car has hydraulic power assist for its steering and the
Turbo gets electrically assisted power steering that is a bit light and largely devoid
of feel.
