Recently, many scientists came
to suspect that a protein called NF - κB, a master regulator of infection and inflammation, was at work; in 1996, several groups had found that it also inhibited
cell death, which can
lead to tumor formation.
To find out whether suspicions about NF - κB were well - founded, molecular biologist Michael Karin of the University of California, San Diego, and his colleagues
turned to a mouse model of colitis.
