We are trying to find out exactly how and why the nerve cells in the Alzheimer's brain decide to
turn on their cell division system.

One research group [led by a former student] made mice with adult brain
cells and forced them with a viral gene to
turn on cell -
division machinery.
The whole process is reminiscent of trial - and - error learning in which each
cell explores — at its own rhythm and independently of
cell division — different molecular possibilities (i.e. different genes
turned on or off) before reaching a stable combination of active genes and the corresponding morphology.
The egg's very structure, its scaffolding of proteins that guide the chromosomes during
cell division, may also play a key role in
turning on the necessary genes.
For example, a gene called p53, which normally acts as a brake
on cell division,
turns out to be mutated or lost in about half of all tumours.
As a powerful tumor suppressor, p53
turns on genes that either halt
cell division to allow time for repair of damaged DNA or, when all rescue attempts prove futile, to prevent
cells with genetic defects from dividing, as this would fuel the development of cancer.
Five studies conducted
on 4,443 breast cancer survivors over a period of nine years found that the benefits of vitamin D help to increase communication between
cells by
turning on a protein that blocks
cells division.
