Loggerhead sea
turtles, which feed thousands
of miles from their hatching grounds, seem to return to breed with their genetic relatives
at sites very close to their births.
Tel Aviv University researchers, in collaboration with scholars from Spain and Germany, have uncovered evidence
of turtle specimens
at the 400,000 - year - old
site, indicating that early man enjoyed eating
turtles in addition to large game and vegetal material.
More than 95 percent
of sea
turtles present
at the spill
site are thought to have originated from outside
of the U.S., including from populations throughout the Gulf
of Mexico, Caribbean, northern South America, and western Africa.

At the deeper end
of the dive
site we see sharks,
turtles, and in season the famous Mola Mola (Sunfish).
The boat captains will steer you to safe snorkelling
sites where you can marvel
at the abundant colourful sea life and try to catch a glimpse
of a giant sea
turtle.
Heron is a great place to spot nesting
turtles, rare birds and passing whales, as well as to enjoy snorkelling from the shore, or
at one
of 20 dive
sites around the island.
Kids may also enjoy visiting the nesting
sites of the endangered loggerhead sea
turtle, which are located
at the western end
of the beach.
One day the boat could be heading north to one
of the
sites with beautiful corals, an abundance
of reef fish as well as the occasional
turtle and on the next day the boat may head south to find the mantas, the seahorse
at crystal bay and if lucky also a mola mola.
If you have more time, you can add some additional underwater adventures such as a visit to the walls on the ocean side
of the reef, an exploration
of coral caverns, or a stop
at a dive
site where freshwater springs bubble up from the reef, attracting Napoleon wrasse and sea
turtles.

turtle and the loggerhead nesting

Six miles away,

Turtles used to be present
at the dive
sites but we had some problems seeing them as there were a good number
of Tiger sharks on the area.
Santa Teresa needs to get organized for this, because just north
at Manzanillo and above, it has been discovered that all four
of Costa Rica's sea
turtles are laying eggs, making it one
of just a small handful
of sites in the world with so many sea
turtle species in one location.
The range is home to a number
of important conservation targets which include, but are not limited to,
at least 2 marine fish spawning aggregation
sites, a breeding population
of the endangered American Crocodile, and a number
of threatened coastal marine habitats including the greater reef complex itself, beach forests that support several important species
of resident and migratory birds and
at least 2 species
of marine
turtles are believed to nest on the range.
What you get to see
at the top snorkelling
sites around Alimatha are various types
of coral, schools
of bannerfish, clownfish, fusilliers, smaller grey reef sharks,
turtles and a myriad
of other marine inhabitants whose home are the stunning coral reefs around Alimatha.
There are not many night diving
sites in the Maldives thanks to the ever changing currents, but Maaya Thila is a stand out location due to the large collection
of stingrays,
turtles and whitetip sharks that are active
at night.
At these
sites, divers can encounter whitetip reef sharks,
turtles, pelagic, schools
of tropical fish, nice corals and great macro.

at sites such as Donald Duck Bay, but you maybe lucky enough to spot them just about
at any
of the destinations, throughout the country.
In Turkey, the local chapter
of WWF, one
of the organizations that helped get nesting
sites protected in the first place, is leading its own
turtle conservation efforts
at Akyatan lagoon, an important green -
turtle nesting beach that is suffering the effects
of pollution.
To date, there have been no detectable declines in the number
of nesting green
turtles at Great Barrier Reef nest monitoring
sites.
