Joslin scientists in the Tseng Laboratory of the Section on Integrative Physiology and Metabolism previously discovered that one
type of bone morphogenetic protein, BMP - 7, plays a key role in the control of brown fat formation and its heat - producing activity, which regulates whole body metabolism.

The researchers were also able to control the relative composition
of different hormonal cell
types simply by exposing human pluripotent stem cells to different ratios
of two proteins: fibroblast growth factor 8 and
bone morphogenetic protein 2.
Most
of these «familial» cases have been linked to mutations in a gene called BMPR2 (
bone morphogenetic protein receptor,
type II), which was identified simultaneously in 2000 by two independent research teams, one led by the late Robin Barst and Jane Morse, CUMC researchers.
When the researchers added a specific
bone morphogenetic protein called BMP4, as well as another signaling molecule called retinoic acid, to human embryonic stem cells, they got a mixture
of two
types of sensory interneurons.
They compared the genetic code
of different
types of macrophages to find non-immune genes highly active in muscularis macrophages, identifying
bone morphogenetic protein 2.

By looking for cell populations that would resemble the vertebrate chordamesoderm (a population
of mesodermal midline cells that converge medially to give rise to the notochord; red in Fig. 1A), we identified segmental pairs
of mesodermal cells on the non —
bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) body side (5) that stood out by early and continuous expression
of colA1, encoding collagen
type A (Fig. 2, A to D).
