school film gets the details right — including the hot
type, the printing presses, the bundling
of newspapers that get thrown from trucks and into the hands
of an eager, pre-digital public.
Given the violence in American
schools, this
type of film now seems outdated and irresponsible.
And unlike a movie like We Were Soldiers - which never became anything more than an old -
school, John Wayne-esque «let's rally around our troops»
type of war
film - Harrison's Flowers feels brutally realistic.
Set in the Sixties at an exclusive all - boys prep
school, The Emperor's Club is immediately recognizable as another iteration
of Dead Poets Society, even more so when one realizes that the
film features the same quartet
of student
types (the troubled one, the trickster, the bookish one, the gregarious one — also the same breakdown you'll find in Stand By Me, come to think
of it) and the same crinkly - eyed inspirational professor who finds a lesson for young lives in the heartening words
of dead versifiers.
Hence,
filming teachers who teach students from the same
school, the same district, and similar backgrounds made the difference for our teachers to embrace this
type of sharing.
Just last week over 50 educators gathered at the Harvard Graduate
School of Education (HGSE) for a highly unusual
film festival — probably the only one
of its
type in the world!
With the addition
of new event scenes, such as the massive hole in the
school classroom, there are extra items such as the «Jacob's ladder» (this is a nautical term for a specialist
type of rope ladder — though ironically the
film came out after the game so the two are unconnected).
