list, in order to comply with the Food Standards Code, manufacturers must
list other
types of sweeteners with the «name that describes the true nature
of the ingredient».
Sometimes ingredients, usually
sugar, will be split up into different
types and names so that each on can sit further down the
list and not give the unappealing first ingredient
of «
sugar».
Offer all previous foods as well as the following
list, Any pasta, Any cereal (
sugar - free), Any grains, Citrus fruits, Berries
of any
type, Spinach, Corn, Tomato, Cucumber, Fish, Whole eggs, After 12 months, offer cow's milk
If you do see any
type of sweetener — including brown
sugar, cane juice, corn syrup, maltose or fructose — make sure it's not the first thing
listed.
Also check for multiple
types of sugar, which is a sneaky way food companies make something supersweet without telegraphing it on the ingredients
list.
For example, scan the ingredient
list on Panera Bread's Greek Yogurt With Mixed Berries Parfait, and you'll find five different
types of added
sugars (including molasses, brown
sugar, and maple syrup).
Keep in mind, though, that ingredients are
listed in order
of quantity, so if any
type of sugar is
listed in the first few ingredients, the food is most likely high in added
sugars.
You can use any
type of plant protein you want in this smoothie, but I always suggest reading the ingredient
list on whatever one you choose to make sure the ingredients are made from whole foods, not synthetic vitamins and minerals, refined
sugar, added oils, and chemicals you don't recognize.

listing sugar as the first ingredient in their products, some sneaky food makers use multiple
types of sugar (e.g. honey, cane

of which alone may be smaller in volume than the ingredient
listed first (e.g. oats) even though taken together,
sugar forms a far larger portion.

list of possible side effects confirms this: muscle pain and damage; liver damage; digestive issues; neurological problems; increased blood
sugar and / or
type 2 diabetes; headache; skin flushing or rash; nausea and / or vomiting; drowsiness; and dizziness.
The Model School Nutrition Policy, created by the state Department
of Agriculture, sets a deadline
of September 2007 for all K - 12 schools to stop selling all
types of candies, as well as unhealthy snacks and drinks that
list sugar in any form as the primary ingredient, before the end
of the school day.
