They found that measures of self - efficacy — a personality trait that
underlies how much you believe in your own
abilities to accomplish a goal (as well as deal with the stresses that accompany working toward that goal)-- were
predictive of how risky a climber was willing to get.
It would be nice to also have the
underlying mechanism explained, but it's not necessary — what matters is that it could be shown to be false, and that it have
predictive ability.
