When they are done, I have them score themselves on the vocabulary knowledge step, and then I go back and check how well they performed with
context clue understanding.
As a student gets older, the
context clues provided in
understanding academic language are progressively reduced.
The more students recognize these
context clues and can
understand the basic words being used, the more they can build on their knowledge in order to scaffold to more difficult words.

If students can gain confidence in reading because they
understand what most of the words on the page mean, and can use
context clues to figure out the remaining words, then their reading scores jump significantly.
Context clues are simply that: hints or additional information the author provides (purposefully or not) that can help you
understand the meaning of a particular word or phrase.
This strategy also models how good readers use
context clues to
understand what they are reading.
But, we bet it made them feel a little better to know that they don't have to fake
understanding when they read; the best readers question, reread, look for
context clues, and more in order to better
understand and move through the text.
We're talking about
understanding a question, parsing natural language with irregular grammar, grasping
context from
clues, and coming up with an accurate answer.
