While we have made computer
literacy the norm in our everyday lives, we seem to be falling behind in our ability to keep up and
understand the abundance
of data being created that could help us drive more business and serve our customers better.
Yet, while many Americans are aware
of the importance
of pre-reading skills, they have much less
understanding that children who fall behind in early -
literacy skills often do not catch up to their peers in elementary school, according to a report and polling
data released last week.
We also believe that a key part
of educator
data literacy is the ability to help students
understand their own
data.
She has been instrumental in facilitating professional development initiatives focused on standards - based learning and teaching, improved
understanding and utilization
of assessment
data, interventions and differentiation that meets the needs
of all learners, and strengthened efforts to ensure K — 12
literacy.
They will implement a continuous improvement process tailored to the needs
of each
of the schools, use
data from the Montana longitudinal secondary
data system to depict historical trends in
literacy outcomes across the state and by subgroups, and include a comparison study
of schools participating in the Montana Striving Readers Program (but not the partnership) to
understand the
literacy challenges and monitor the impact
of the solutions.
Prerequisite skills and capabilities include, but are not limited to, proficiency in reading a range and type
of material, with an emphasis on informational texts; fluent writing in several modes, most notably expository, descriptive and argumentative; quantitative
literacy through algebra and including geometry, combined with the ability to
understand and interpret
data; a
understanding of the scientific method and some insight into the organization
of knowledge in the sciences; an awareness
of how social systems operate and how they are studied; basic proficiency in a second language and awareness that languages reflect cultures; and experiences in and appreciation
of creative and expressive arts.
This research - based,
data - driven program builds an
understanding of the role
literacy plays in academic achievement and reinforces the skills needed to address student performance challenges in reading comprehension and content areas.
She provides leadership in designing effective comprehensive assessment systems, including guidance on the development
of performance assessments and rubrics, facilitating deep
understanding of cognitive rigor, scoring and analyzing student work, and deepening
understanding of assessment and
data literacy.

To
understand the degree to which teacher preparation programs are responding to the changes in the field regarding the use
of data by assimilating
data literacy into their courses (or are part
of a forward vanguard) we can glean some insights from a survey conducted by WestEd's Ellen Mandinach and Edith Gummer at the Kauffman Foundation.
In helping two southern Oregon school districts increase their
data literacy (which I define as the ability
of a district or group
of people to collect and
understand data and then use the
data to ultimately improve student learning), I've developed some suggestions to share with districts starting down a similar path.
