Climate science is an
area that exemplifies the importance
of ensuring that policy makers — particularly Governments and their advisers, Non-Governmental Organisations and other lobbyists —
understand the limits on what scientists can say and with what degree
of confidence.
The run - up in
climate science funding is rather modest compared to other
areas of science funding, and a more reasonable interpretation
of the funding picture isn't that
climate scientists are trying to act alarmed in order to run up their funding, but rather that they (we) are trying to run up funding because they actually are alarmed and feel that the subject needs to be
understood better.
Given your interest in the state
of climate science, we would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to better
understand your perspective and rationale for the proposed activity; and to discuss
climate science, including which
areas are at the frontiers
of scientific knowledge and which are well - established because
of thousands
of studies from multiple lines
of evidence.
While there are still many unsolved
science problems in the
climate area, it may not be worthwhile to publish another set
of NIPCC volumes unless major advances in our
understanding of climate science appear in the published literature.

science is conceived in other politically or philosophically sensitive
areas to help
understand the public response to the threat
of man made
climate change.
Instead, the goals should be to promote relevant
areas of knowledge beyond just technical
understanding of climate science that include
understanding of the social, institutional, ethical, and economic dimensions
of the debate along with familiarity with the costs and benefits
of a range
of policy proposals.
From my experience watching the
climate science issue advance over the years, what I continually see is people, like yourself who have clear expertise in a specific
area, believing that they
understand the entire breadth
of the
climate change issue when, in actuality, they
understand very little
of the other broader elements
of the global
climate system that come into play.
Experiences in other
areas of science and even
climate science show the value
of having multiple independent teams
of analysts look at the same piece
of data to enhance our
understanding.
