For years, teachers
unions and major Democratic politicians and donors have battled bitterly
over what
education reform should look like.
The Boston Teachers
Union reached an agreement last week with city officials on a new salary schedule for teachers, breaking an eight - month deadlock
over how to finance the
education reforms the contract promises.
The presence of Democrats in the
reform movement has led to a deepening rift within the party
over the role of
unions in
education and teacher protections, particularly as the
reform movement has so far failed to deliver on its promised outcomes.
Richard Berman, executive director of the Center for
Union Facts, says yesterday's «Day of Action» is no more than the latest attempt by the powerful teachers union to pull the wool over the public's eyes: «Randi Weingarten doesn't care about reforming schools in the name of quality education; she cares about exploding government budgets in the name of filling her union's bank account.&r

The
union could be flexing its muscle in advance of the upcoming legislative session's showdown
over education reforms and funding.
In any event, AFT's latest battles against
education reform have been centered on Michigan and Pennsylvania — the former because it recently stopped forcing its teachers to join the
union as a condition of employment and the latter because of a squabble
over education funding.
It has been both amusing and instructive to watch the disintegrating nexus between the Democratic Party and one of its staunchest and most reliable constituencies, the teachers
unions,
over the
reform of public
education around the country.
As much as
unions seethed
over the passage of
reform, supporters of better
education were jubilant.
Over the past ten years, the policies undergirding the national
education reform movement — offering more school choice, weakening teacher
union power, and creating new accountability systems (with incentives like pay - for - performance and teacher evaluations based partly on student test scores)-- have taken hold in the nation's capital.

Parent trigger is the latest flashpoint in the wars
over «
education reform» (a term now claimed by right - wing front groups, defensive teachers»
unions and activists of many stripes).
The lawsuit follows months of wrangling between the school district and the teachers
union over the «mutual consent» provision of the 2010
education reform law that implemented a new system for evaluating teachers.
Over the last quarter century, the teachers
unions have clearly been the most powerful force in American
education, and they have clearly been using their extraordinary power — in collective bargaining at the local level, in the political process at the state and national levels — to undermine major
reform and to burden the schools (via seniority provisions, the protection of bad teachers, and all the rest) with ineffective forms of organization.
For more than a decade, the debate
over public school
reform has created friction between teachers
unions, administrators, school boards, parents, policymakers, and other stakeholders in public
education and has fueled disagreements
over how to improve the quality of teaching and learning for children.
But despite teacher
unions giving more than $ 10 million dollars to the DGA
over the past decade, the organization whose role it is to elect Democratic governors has remained committed to an
education reform agenda that is actively and intentionally undermining teachers, the teaching profession and the nation's public
education system.
Education reform in K - 12 schools has become politically fraught, dividing teachers
unions, one of which endorsed Clinton during her 2008 presidential run, from Democrats in the Obama administration
over issues such as teacher tenure, performance evaluations and school accountability.
Throughout Florida's legislative session,
education reform groups and teachers»
unions have done battle
over proposals to pass a very controversial «parent trigger» law.
As
education reform leaders and
unions fight
over policies that mandate rigorous teacher evaluations and encourage the growth of charter schools, poor kids are losing out in the most basic of ways — a situation that embeds them deeper in the cycle of poverty.
Her focus is on
education, where the teachers
unions have blocked meaningful
reforms for years; protecting bad teachers from being terminated, promoting based on seniority instead of merit, taking
over local school boards with hand - picked,
union - financed candidates, attacking charter schools, prioritizing teacher compensation and job security
over student achievement, and pushing a social agenda in front of academic fundamentals.
