student district attracted the national spotlight this year because
of disagreements between the district and the
union over changes proposed by Superintendent Michael Bennet to the pay system called Professional...
But when the school district and teachers
union got wind
of the Broad Foundation's plan to help launch schools to serve those
students, simmering tensions
over charter school expansion exploded.
Here are some recent quotes from a variety

Meanwhile, in school districts from Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles and Seattle, teacher
unions and superintendents have clashed
over the use
of new evaluation systems that base compensation on
student test scores.
Students seem to benefit from their teachers» having influence
over the curriculum, but only when they act as individuals and not as part
of a
union.
But in schools where teachers acting collectively as a
union had a lot
of influence
over the curriculum,
students performed 32 points worse in math, 18 points in science.
Teachers»
unions are strongly against these plans for a variety
of reasons, including that they say it's nearly impossible to accurately measure an individual teacher's contribution to a
student's success, since a child's achievement is cumulative
over a period
of years and the result
of the efforts
of many people.
The research reinforces the concerns and sense
of uncertainty being voiced by many international
student's following the referendum, largely
over the possible increase in university fees and or visa restrictions once the UK exits the European
Union.

of Effective Teaching (MET) project, which will be implemented
over the next two academic years, seeks to develop an array
of measures that will be viewed by teachers,
unions, administrators, and policymakers as reliable and credible indicators
of a teacher's impact on

The experiences
of these six districts demonstrate how collaboration between teacher's
unions and administration can be created and sustained
over time to improve teaching quality and
student performance.
Tables
of elderly black matrons in their Sunday finest buzz with neighborhood gossip, while just a few feet away
union reps pass the inexpensive red wine to their wives, and elsewhere unreserved tables
of strangers make nice with college
students, entrepreneurs, government workers — white, black, and Hispanic — all bonding
over their common hopes for the city.

of teachers increased by
over 17 % while the
student population shrank by almost 7 %.
The Professional Staff Congress — the
union the represents CUNY's 27,000 faculty and staff, along with CUNY Rising, an emerging coalition, is asking faculty and
students at Bronx Community College, Brooklyn College, Hostos Community College and Lehman College to grab their cameras and take pictures
of crumbling buildings and classrooms, and other evidence that the system and its infrastructure have been neglected
over the years.
While negotiations between the
union and district have stalled
over the issue
of how much weight to give
student test scores, E4E - LA members found that teachers would support incorporating
student growth data, but worry about focusing myopically on one high - stakes test.
I do agree with this comment but the problem is that this government does not and will not listen to teachers nor parents.There have been many contentious issues
over the past ten years and the government just ploughs on regardless.There needs to be a massive demonstration by society in order to protect the interests
of students first.Politicians are notorious for telling us what we need and what is good for us and they have no clue what goes on in schools.I do not see a solution to this but the teacher
unions must be much more vocal and really speak up for the teachers and parents in this country.
The state's teachers»
union said it plans to call for a vote
of no confidence in state Education Department Commissioner John King on the ongoing controversy
over new
student testing and teacher evaluations.
The district has launched a voluntary review program using
student test scores as one measure
of instructor effectiveness, but the teachers
union has opposed it and filed an unfair labor practice complaint
over the program's introduction without collective bargaining.
Parents
of students and members
of teachers
unions sued Walker
over the law as it applied to rules put together by the Department
of Public Instruction, which is headed by Evers.
Being touted as the suit that could «reignite the battle
over union protections for Minnesota teachers» by local publications such as the Star Tribune, this suit is being modeled after recent landmark cases in New York and California that seek to chip away outdated tenure provisions that many reformers contend degrade the professionalism
of educators and hurt
students.
In July 2007, Fenton Avenue Charter School welcomed the first residents
of Hope Gardens, the
Union Rescue Mission's interim housing complex for homeless families providing Fenton with
over one hundred
students.
Union City, New Jersey has implemented high - quality pre-K for all for
over a decade and illustrates the long - term potential: though 90 percent
of students are economically disadvantaged, the district scores one - third
of a grade level above the national average in reading and math (looking at scores from grades 3 to 8).
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) today announced REACH
Students (Recognizing Educators Advancing Chicago's
Students) a new, comprehensive teacher evaluation system, designed
over the course
of 90 hours
of meetings in collaboration with the Chicago Teachers
Union (CTU), that will provide teachers with unprecedented tools and support to improve their practice and better drive
student learning.
After two years
of trying to get changes at the school, and dropping the threatened trigger by the parents at least once, the 20th Street Parents
Union filed again last month to take
over the school with 57 percent
of the families (the parents
of 342
students) signing a petition.
As a result
of commitments made under federal funding or prompting from community demands as well as courts - a number
of districts are engaged with their local teachers
unions over new evaluation systems that include
student performance as an indicator.
Over the last several years federal and state accountability legislation has come under attack from a duo
of strange bedfellows: Tea Party / Trump - ish acolytes who wave the banner
of local control and teacher
union leaders who disdain objective measurements
of student learning, at least when they're tied to teacher evaluations and job security.
It's about not treating
students like dirt and breaking the stranglehold the
unions have
over any kind
of meaningful change like longer school days or school years, etc..
This includes the new teacher evaluation pilot program that is part
of the revised version
of Gov. Dan Malloy's school reform package contained in what is now Public Law 116, which will only involve eight - to - 10 districts; the fact that NEA and AFT affiliates are still opposed to this plan and are also battling reformers
over another evaluation framework that uses
student test score data that the
unions had supported just several months earlier also raises questions as to whether Connecticut can actually earn the flexibility from federal accountability that has been gained through the waiver.
However, because standardized testing is a matter
of public concern, a local speaking as a
union, or an individual member speaking as a parent or citizen, about educational concerns
over standardized testing, for instance, in a letter to the editor or in a statement to the Board
of Education, is protected by the U.S. Constitution at least so long as they are not encouraging other parents or
students to opt out from a test.»
This School Board has been implementing their innovative strategy
over a number
of years, incorporated all partners — including teacher
unions and support staff — and built a budget in support
of this collective vision, with ongoing parent and
student voice that continue to inform these changes.
